Five tenants have been displaced following a wall fire at a two-apartment house in Greencastle late Wednesday evening.

At about 11:05 p.m., the Greencastle Fire Department received a direct call from a resident at 418 E. Washington St. for a fire in their apartment.

After a message went out for a fire in a wall, Greencastle Fire responded with an engine. Smoke was reported from an outlet after firefighters entered a bedroom on the second floor.

A water can was used to knock most of the fire down as the power was shut off. An inch-and three-quarter line was also deployed from the engine.

Personnel arrived shortly afterward in Greencastle Fire’s other engine, while the Cloverdale Township Volunteer Fire Department was called in for support. Greencastle police were also at the scene.

No injuries have been reported. The American Red Cross was contacted to assist some of the tenants.

Though a specific cause is unknown, Greencastle Fire Asst. Chief Rob Frank told the Banner Graphic that the fire was accidental in nature.

While not a total loss, damages accounting for both apartments were estimated at $10,000. Holes in the floor and ceiling were made by firefighters checking the structure.

After Cloverdale Township Fire was released, Greencastle Fire went back into service at about 12:25 a.m. Thursday morning.
