FEATURED SENIOR ATHLETE: Gloria Brewer, Greencastle

Banner Graphic: How important are sports to you, and what have you learned from them?
Gloria Brewer: “They’re important to me but not the most important thing. I put God and family first, then sports. They teach you thing like communication, failure and success and how to handle both those things.”
BG: Talk about basketball.
GB: “I used to play baseball and switched to softball. I’ve played basketball on a team since I was in kindergarten and played since I could walk. I don’t remember not playing.”
BG: What’s the most embarrassing thing that has happened to you in sports?
GB: “A few years ago, I was diving for a ball, going out of bounds and kept sliding into a storage closet.”
BG: What does your game day routine look like?
GB: “I get up, eat breakfast, go to school, shoot around, listen to my music, stretch and go play.”
BG: It’s been a bit of a change this year, being in a high school and being part of a high school team. How has the adjustment gone?
GB: “Everyone has been welcoming. The teachers have been nice and the coaches and my teammates have been great, including Stephanie, Zoe, Emma, Evie and everybody else on the team.”
BG: Do you have any favorite college/pro sports teams or athletes you follow?
GB: “I’ve always loved Larry Bird and Michael Jordan. I watch Golden State a lot and both Steph Curry and Clay Thompson are my favorite current players.”
BG: What do you like to do outside of school and sports?
GB: “I like to hang out with my family and dogs. I do a lot of church activities with my youth group and am part of a ministry that works with cancer patients.”
BG: What are your favorites in movies, TV and music?
GB: “My favorite movie is ‘Hoosiers’ because my dad is in it. I like gospel music and the book ‘Sarah, Plain and Tall.’”
BG: Are you a person that wants to watch TV shows and movies or stream something from YouTube, Twitch, TikTok etc.?
GB: “I’d probably watch some TV and then do some woodworking.”
BG: What is something you have never done before that you would like to do someday?
GB: “I’d like to see the Grand Canyon.”
BG: What is your biggest fear?
GB: “Tornadoes.”
BG: You’ve been placed in charge of making dinner. What’s on the menu?
GB: “Steak, baked potatoes and garlic green beans.”
BG: Do you have any pets?
GB: “I have two dogs, both beagles, named Copper and Dixie.”
BG: If your house were on fire, all living things were already out and you have your keys, cell phone, wallet/purse etc., what is one thing you would go back and get?
GB: “I’d either get some pictures or a Bible out.”
BG: If you were to describe your personality in one word, what would that word be and why?
GB: “Even-keeled. I don’t get to hype about much or down about anything. Just be steady.”
BG: What has been your favorite place to visit?
GB: “Tennessee. I went to Gatlinburg, drove go-karts and drove a four-wheeler through the mountains. It was a lot of fun.”
BG: What was your favorite school field trip?
GB: “We went to the airport once. We looked at a lot of planes and learned a lot about how it works.”
BG: How important is support from your family and classmates to your success?
GB: “It’s very important. You always want to be supported and my family has always supported me very well. My teammates have also been great.”
BG: Describe your overall school experience both academically and athletically.
GB: “It’s been great. I love it. Everything has been going really good so far. The team has been very welcoming and very sweet.”
BG: If your school was to offer a class it currently doesn’t, what would you want to see taught?
GB: “Woodworking.”
BG: What are your plans for after high school, and what career are you headed toward?
GB: “I’d like to play college basketball. I’d like to major in either elementary education, graphic design or culinary arts. I’m not really sure which yet.”
BG: Is it difficult to keep up with your school work being an athlete?
GB: “Not really. Since I am home-schooled, I can fluctuate my schedule a little bit to help out.”
BG: Which particular classes and teachers have helped you the most in high school?
GB: “My mom has taught me my whole life and she has been very helpful.”
BG: In the future, once you’ve established yourself, if you had your choice, would you want to live in the mountains, on the beach or in the neighborhood?
GB: “I would want to stay out here and out in the country. I like living out in the country and don’t see myself in the city.”
BG: Do you think high school has gone fast, and are you going to miss it?
GB: “I’ll definitely miss it. I’ve loved every moment since I’ve been here.”
