Sheriff’s Office

Putnam County sheriff’s deputies investigated four recent property-damage crashes.

• At 11:20 p.m. on Friday, Rickie A. Johnson, 35, Greencastle, was northbound on U.S. 231 in a 1996 Chevrolet Silverado in heavy fog.

Johnson told Deputy Todd Hopkins that as he prepared to turn left onto County Road 350 North, he saw a vehicle approaching from behind him. As he was beginning to make the turn, the car struck him.

The car was a 2015 Kia Sorrento driven by Isayah D. Hardwick, 16, Greencastle. Hardwick told Hopkins he had been following the pickup for some distance but that the fog was so thick that he could not see his brakes lights in time.

Hardwick said he tried to stop and swerve, but could not avoid a collision.

One passenger in Johnson’s vehicle complained of neck pain, but she declined medical attention.

Johnson drove his truck from the scene. Hardwick’s father arrived on the scene and had someone come to tow the car.

Hopkins estimated damage at $2,500-$5,000.

• At 10:31 p.m. on Friday, Esther M. Hale, 22, Greencastle, was westbound on County Road 50 North approaching a T-intersection at County Road 225 East in a 2006 Toyota Sienna.

Hale told Reserve Deputy Joe Tesmer she missed the stop sign at 225 East due to extreme fog, leaving the road and going airborne into a culvert, then hitting small trees and rocks before coming to a stop.

The van was towed. Tesmer estimated damage at $5,000-$10,000.

• At 2:57 a.m. on Thursday, Jourdain A. Reynolds, 26, Greencastle, was southbound on U.S. 231 in a 2011 Chevrolet Equinox when he ran off the road, entered the ditch, hit two mailboxes and a road sign before ramping a driveway and rolling over, coming to rest facing north.

Reynolds told Deputy Robert Soilleux his tire suddenly went flat. He only remembered striking a mailbox before he closed his eyes and “hung on for the ride.”

Reynolds said he was not injured and refused medical aid. However, he showed signs of impairment, so Soilleux had him transported to the hospital to be checked out and medically cleared for jail. He was issued a blood test and booked in the Putnam County Jail at 4:57 a.m. on charges of driving while intoxicated.

The car was towed. Soilleux, who was assisted by Deputy Josh Clark, estimated damage at $10,000-$25,000.

• At 6:15 p.m. on Wednesday, William H. Buescher, 62, Coatesville, was westbound on U.S. 36 in a 2018 Ford F-350 when he hit a deer.

Deputy Clark estimated damage at $5,000-$10,000.
