Students are selected for having a variety of interests, participation in school and extracurricular activities, making contributions to their home, church and community, their scholastic achievement and awards, and exhibiting such qualities as dependability, service, leadership and patriotism.

Each contestant must write an essay about the responsibility of good citizenship, submit a transcript of grades and two letters of recommendation. Independent judges with no DAR affiliation review the four entries.

A ceremony will be held Tuesday, Dec. 6 at 3 p.m. in the Kiwanis Room at the Putnam County Public Library. The individual winners will be recognized and read their essays for DAR members, parents and school faculty. The overall Good Citizen will be announced following their presentations.
