Stockton officially steps down as sheriff
Weeks shy of the expiration of his second term, Scott Stockton officially stepped down as Putnam County Sheriff on Sunday.
The Putnam County Sheriff’s Office published a statement from Stockton on its Facebook page Monday morning:
On Sunday, Dec. 11, 2022, I officially announced my departure from the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office. After eight years of honorably serving the citizens of this great County, and 37 years total in law enforcement, I am moving into the next chapter of my life. Although it won’t be in a direct law enforcement capacity anymore, I will be continuing service to Indiana citizens as the director of fraud examinations for the Indiana State Board of Accounts.
Eight years of service as the chief law enforcement officer for Putnam County have truly been an honor and a privilege. To be elected twice as sheriff was humbling. It displayed to me that you, the public, have put trust into the work my team and I have been implementing to maintain honor and integrity within this office. I truly believe this is one of the finest sheriff’s offices within the state.
Veteran Indiana State Excise Police Officer Jerrod Baugh was elected as the next sheriff and has already announced the appointment of longtime Greencastle Police Chief Tom Sutherlin as his chief deputy.
Baugh retired from his excise job earlier this year, while Sutherlin just recently stepped down at GPD, with a retirement ceremony in his honor set Wednesday.
Chief Deputy Matt Demmings will be acting sheriff until the new administration arrives on Jan. 1.
“Thank you for all the past and continued support to your law enforcement,” Stockton wrote.
