Greencastle wins at a canter over South Vermillion
BRAZIL – Greencastle made short work of South Vermillion in the opening round of the Jenni Marietta State Farm Classic at Northview Wednesday, routing the Wildcats 77-10.
“One thing that stuck out to me was our shooting percentage,” Greencastle head coach Doug Greenlee said. “I’m not certain yet what it was but it was pretty good overall and we converted well at the line, shooting 75 percent there.
“We played quarter court defense all night and did what we had to do to advance to the next round. It’s a few days away but we’ll be ready for (Parke Heritage) when the time comes.”
Gloria Brewer scored 16 of her game-high 28 points in the opening quarter before taking a backseat role the rest of the way as Evie Briones scored 10 points in the second quarter with Emma Hunter and Zoey Doan adding five points each as the Tiger Cubs led 52-5 at halftime.
Brewer, Briones and Hunter each scored their final points in the third quarter before the rest of the squad took over with frontcourt players Stephanie Morales, Madi Plew, Aleeyah Johnson and Bailey Brown handling the remainder of the scoring.
Defensively, Greencastle held South Vermillion to a single basket in each quarter and no free throws, having only committed four fouls over 32 minutes while also only having six turnovers on the night.
The Tiger Cubs will face Parke Heritage, who defeated West Vigo 47-37, in the semifinal round at 10 a.m. when play resumes Jan. 2.
