TERRE HAUTE – The script was beginning to take on a similar form to many of the seven losses Greencastle had suffered in the 2022-23 boys’ basketball season.

After falling behind Casey-Westfield early, the Tiger Cubs made a late run to close down a double-digit gap, only for the Warriors to make the necessary steps to see off the young team in purple in the second game of the consolation bracket at the Wabash Valley Classic Tuesday afternoon.

Except Cole Hutcheson came along, tore the script apart and rewrote his own ending, scoring 12-straight points to flip an 11-point deficit into a lead with Sam Gooch and Anthony Adams scoring the final points to grant Greencastle a 62-58 win.

Greencastle (2-7) was wary of Casey-Westfield Jackson Parcell, who came in averaging shy of 20 ppg, yet it was big man Jacob Clement who posed problems early, draining a three and two jumpers to keep the game tight early.

Nathan Sutherlin had started the game with two jumpers while Hutcheson hit a free throw and a jumper following a Cody Evans three to give the Tiger Cubs a 10-7 advantage.

Hayden Parcell tied the game with a free throw and layup while a 7-2 close with Clement and Jackson Parcell scoring at the rim and Nolan Clement hitting a three gave the Warriors a 17-12 lead after a quarter of play.

A 9-0 run saw Casey-Westfield extend the lead to 26-14 early in the second quarter as Gooch and Evans, who left towards the end of the first quarter with a severe nosebleed, scored the last eight points for the Tiger Cubs.

Hayden Parcell hit two late threes while Nolan Clement scored at the rim to keep the double-digit lead intact as Casey-Westfield led 34-22 at halftime.

The younger Clement and Parcell combo helped keep the lead at 12 after three quarters of play, scoring half of the 11 points the Warriors collected as a team in the period, with Greencastle also scoring 11 points as the gap remained 12 at 45-33 entering the last eight minutes.

An 8-0 run to start the fourth quarter saw Hutcheson score twice around baskets from Sutherlin and Gooch to trim the gap to 45-41.

Casey-Westfield got five-straight points from Connor Sullivan with a later putback from the post player and a three from Nolan Clement seemingly putting the Warriors out of sight with a 57-46 lead with three minutes left to play.

It was then that Hutcheson burst into life, knocking down consecutive threes before adding a layup off an Evans steal and capping the two-minute eruption with a four-point play that saw Greencastle shoot into a 58-57 lead.

Jackson Parcell could only tie the game at the line with Gooch slicing through the lane for a layup and Adams adding two free throws as the Tiger Cubs closed with a 16-1 run.

Greencastle faces Parke Heritage Wednesday at 1 p.m.
