Verlin Earl Cash

Verlin Earl Cash, 95, of Greencastle, passed away at his residence on Monday, Dec. 26, 2022.

Verlin was born in his residence in Fillmore on Oct. 29, 1927, the son of Earl Edgar and Lela (Arnold) Cash.

He was a 1945 graduate of Fillmore High School. He attended Ivy Tech for auto body repair and refrigeration.

Mr. Cash was a member of Fillmore Christian Church and Open Hearts Christian Fellowship. He was a lifetime member of the former Fillmore Lions Club, the Greencastle Lions Club, where he served as president and worked long hours at the Putnam County Fairgrounds in the Lions Food Booth.

Verlin was a beef, hog, dairy and grain farmer. He hauled lime, was a school bus driver for Fillmore, South Putnam and Greencastle for 44 years. He retired from IBM when it closed after 25 years of service. Additionally, he worked for Hoffa Security for two years, Butler LP for six years and Bainbridge Co-Alliance for three years.

Verlin built the family homestead and barn of 43 years. He collected Corvairs and enjoyed restoring them.

Verlin played trumpet and sang with a band called the Blue Notes. He loved being with family and friends, making homemade ice cream, playing euchre, plow days, riding his Indian motorcycle, sitting and watching his kids, grandkids and great-grandkids. He was so proud of who they have become. “Mom, we did good!”

Verlin married Lois Mae Lewis on June 14, 1947, and built a life with her over 72 years. He went to join her and his parents; his two brothers, Donald and Russell; his two sisters, Betty Jordan and Freda Minkler; and his great-grandson, Andrew Nees.

Surviving are three children, Sandy Nees (husband John) of Cloverdale, Steve Cash (wife Patti) of Fillmore and Cindy Earley (husband Roger) of Greencastle; 10 grandkids, Brian Nees (Becky), Michael Nees (Jamie), Shawn Nees (Valerie), Dan Cash, Angela Lee (Charlie), Stacia Luh (Adrian), Jennifer Foxx (Brandon), Laura Earley (Tiff), Ryan Nees (Jenna) and Eric Earley (Mindy); 20 great-grandkids, Zack, Shelby, Nathaniel, Abby, Kelsey, Michaela, Andrea, Spencer and Carter Nees, Nathaniel Cash, Mcguire, Grace Lee, Sariah and Brinley Luh, Hailee and Owen Foxx, Kensi Nees and Tanner, Parker and Cooper Earley; a sister, Darlene Brattain; and several nieces and nephews.

The family would like to thank his caregivers, Towanda Foy, Kathy Rich, Linda Watson, JoAnna Blagrave, Alisha Wilson, Lisa Noblit, Jana Kissel, Dr. Kissel and Dr. Robert Heavin.

Services will be held 1 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 2 at Hopkins-Rector Funeral Home with Pastor John Nees officiating. Burial will follow in Fillmore Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 11 a.m. until time of service on Monday.
