Sheriff’s Office

Putnam County sheriff’s deputies investigated several recent property-damage crashes.

• At 6:05 p.m. on Wednesday, Tom Dloniak, 59, Greencastle, was westbound on State Road 240 in a 2006 Pontiac Grand Prix, coming out of a curve in the roadway.

Dloniak told Deputy Todd Hopkins that he did not know what happened but that something had hit his vehicle.

Jerry L. Nodley, 51, Greencastle, was eastbound in a 2007 Chevrolet Impala. He said his dog was in the back seat and began to whine, so he turned slightly to scold it. At that point, something, apparently Dloniak’s vehicle, collided with his car.

Bianca R. Hammons, 19, Indianapolis, was also eastbound in a 2018 Chevrolet Malibu. She said she saw Dloniak’s vehicle coming around the corner, but could not tell if it was in the correct lane of travel. She said Dloniak’s vehicle collided with Nodley’s in front of her, then traveled past hers, striking her driver side mirror.

Elmer J. Duncan, 48, Greencastle, was eastbound behind Hammons in a 2022 Ford Ranger. He told Hopkins he did not see the first collision, but saw Dloniak’s car cross the centerline and into his path of travel broadside to him. He could not avoid colliding with the passenger side of Dloniak’s car.

Between the drivers’ confusion about the crash as well as the fact that it was raining and no tire marks were visible, Hopkins said it was unclear the exact cause of the accident. However, Dloniak’s car was heavily damaged in the front and passenger side, while Nodley’s also had heavy front-end damage. Duncan’s truck initially seemed like it could be driven from the scene, but upon further inspection, it appeared a tire would rub against the frame of the vehicle. All three of these were towed.

Hammons was able to drive her car from the scene.

Both Dloniak and Nodley were tended to by medics for minor cuts and pain, but declined further treatment.

Hopkins estimated damage at $10,000-$25,000.

• At 8:50 p.m. on Monday, Zachary L. Morgan, 18, Greencastle, was westbound on County Road 550 South at the intersection of County Road 500 West in a 2002 Ford Explorer.

The weather at the time was freezing rain, and Morgan lost control while going straight, hitting the north side of a bridge.

The vehicle was towed. Deputy Robert Soilleux estimated damage at $5,000-$10,000.

• At 7:35 p.m. on Monday, Casey Crary, 18, Greencastle, was eastbound on West Walnut Street in a 2019 Honda CR-V when a dog ran into the road.

In an attempt to avoid the dog, Crary left the road and hit three mailboxes on the north side of the road.

Deputy Joshua Clark estimated damage at $2,500-$5,000.

• At 7:30 p.m. on Monday, Jeffrey M. Newport, 31, Brownsburg, was pulling out of a driveway and turning left onto U.S. 231 in a 2015 GMC Sierra. Danielle M. Williamson, 35, Cloverdale, was northbound on U.S. 231 in a 2004 Pontiac Grand Am.

Newport told Deputy Soilleux that he the road was clear when he began to pull out, but suddenly a vehicle was upon him from the south, moving very fast, and clipped the rear end of his truck.

Williamson told the deputy that Newport’s truck had pulled out in front of her.

The drivers also gave conflicting reports over what happened after the crash, with Newport saying he went to check on Williamson, finding her crying and on the phone, with an unrestrained child in the front seat. He also said that numerous vehicles arrived shortly after the crash and removed several items from the car and left the scene.

Williamson, on the other hand, said she was already upset and crying before the crash and had called her sister to come help her. She also said that her six-year-old daughter was secured in a car seat at the time of the crash. However, Soilleux noted that when he arrived at the scene, there was no car seat in the Pontiac.

Neither driver reported the crash, with each believing the other had done so. A passing STAR Ambulance discovered and reported the crash, also treating the individuals at the scene.

Soilleux, who was assisted by Deputy Clark, estimated damage at $10,000-$25,000.

• At 5:46 p.m. on Monday, Taylor Sullivan, 17, Coatesville, was northbound on Heritage Drive in a 2004 Chevrolet Impala when a deer ran in front of him.

He hit the brakes to avoid the animal and spun out down into a yard.

The car was towed due to damage to its undercarriage and front left wheel.

Deputy Clark estimated damage at $5,000-$10,000.

• At 9:27 a.m. on Monday Katelynn N. Fulkerson, 29, Greencastle, was northbound on State Road 243 just south of U.S. 40 in a 2008 Dodge Durango.

Fulkerson told Cpl. Brian Helmer she was rounding the corner just south of Doe Creek bridge when she lost control, crossed the southbound lane and hit a guardrail. The road was covered in snow and slush at the time.

The SUV was driven from the scene. Helmer estimated damage at $5,000-$10,000.

• At 11:10 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 23, Jazmine Taylor, 19, Indianapolis, was westbound on Heritage Drive in a 2016 Chevrolet Cruze.

Taylor told Deputy Hopkins she was “going a little too fast” and began to lose control of her vehicle due to the road conditions, which included snow and ice on the road. The vehicle slid off the road and came to rest in the woods.

The vehicle was towed. Hopkins estimated damage at $2,500-$5,000.

• At 10:44 a.m. on Friday, Dec. 23, Richard D. Carson, 37, Sullivan, was westbound on County Road 1075 South approaching the stop sign at County Road 525 West in a 2004 Buick Le Sabre.

Carson told Reserve Deputy Joe Tesmer he tried to slow down, but could not on the snow- and ice-covered road. The car slid through the stop and into a guardrail.

The car then jumped an embankment and came to rest against several trees and brush.

Tesmer, who was assisted at the scene by Deputy Randy Patrick, estimated damage at $5,000-$10,000. The car was towed.

• At 10:56 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 22, Mohamed A. Zreba, 63, Cloverdale, was southbound attempting to climb a hill in icy conditions in a 2006 Mazda 6 when he lost control and ran off the road to the east.

The vehicle entered a ditch and hit a tree.

The vehicle was towed. Deputy Soilleux estimated damage at $5,000-$10,000.
