A Greencastle man was taken into custody late Monday night following a pursuit and standoff.

What started as an attempted traffic stop for an inoperable headlight led to a pursuit, a shot fired at an Indiana State Police vehicle and the suspect barricading himself in an East Side Greencastle home for approximately four hours.

In the end, Darell L. Goff, 44, Greencastle, was taken into custody without incident.

The pursuit began around 7:15 p.m. when ISP Putnamville Trooper Kevin Fowler was patrolling in southern Putnam County and notice a vehicle with headlight out. Flower caught up with the vehicle in his fully-marked police car and activated his emergency lights to initiate a traffic stop on U.S. 40 near County Road 510 East, but the driver refused to stop.

The vehicle turned north onto county roads, with the driver at some point allegedly firing a shot at Fowler’s car.

The vehicle eventually made its way to the Woods Edge subdivision on the southeast edge of Greencastle.

ISP reports indicate the vehicle stopped and a male driver then quickly exited the pursued vehicle running away from the vehicle, stating, “There is a child in the car.” It was at this time that a child also exited the vehicle and ran toward Fowler. The child was immediately secured and taken to a safe location.

The male suspect then ran into a Cedarwood Drive residence and barricaded himself inside. A female was already located inside the residence. Negotiators from the Indiana State Police were able to make contact with the male suspect and were able to get the female released safely.

At approximately 11:40 p.m., Indiana State Police SWAT team began using non-lethal tactical techniques to gain voluntary compliance for Goff to surrender. Goff surrendered a few moments later and was taken into custody without further incident.

Goff was then transported to the Putnam County Jail and booked in at 1:52 a.m. Tuesday on initial charges of Level 5 felony possession of a firearm by a serious violent felon, Level 6 felony pointing a firearm, Level 6 felony resisting law enforcement, Level 6 felony neglect of a dependent and Level 6 felony criminal recklessness.

The case will be turned over to the Putnam County Prosecutor’s Office before formal charges are filed.

The investigation is being conducted by ISPdetectives Ryan Winters and Don Curtis, with the assistance of Lt. Jeff Hearon, 1Sgt. Brian Maudlin, and CSI Sgt. Michael Organ of the Putnamville State Police Post.

A photo taken by a neighbor shows how the Indiana State Police SWAT team drove an armored vehicle directly behind a Cedarwood Drive home Monday evening as they negotiated with a man barricaded inside. In the end, Darell L. Goff, 44, Greencastle, was taken into custody without incident.

Assisting with the investigation are the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office and Greencastle Police Department.

  • Seems this one makes a habit of driving around with meth and guns, and then running from cops. Maybe he’ll receive a fair punishment this time around.
