Emily Mae Brooks Mitchell

On Wednesday, Jan. 11, 2023, with many loving family members at her bedside, Emily’s mother sang “Amazing Grace” as Emily Mae Brooks Mitchell gained her heavenly wings at the age of 31.

Emily leaves behind a family that loved her beyond words. Emily was born on Jan. 26, 1991 in Putnam County to Sherrie Haynes and Lee Brooks.

She was more than happy to be the central figure in the lives of her children, Lillian Sutherlin, Isabella Sutherlin and Theodore Mitchell. Emily was a star in their eyes and that’s all that ever mattered to her.

Emily loved life and was a caring, creative person.

Besides her children, Emily is survived by her father, Lee Brooks, and bonus mom, Barbara Brooks of Indianapolis, and mother Sherrie Haynes and dad Jim Haynes, Greencastle.

On April 21, 2017, Emily married Michael Andrew Mitchell, and he survives her. Emily would also want the world to know she is survived by her ex-husband and friend, Richard Sutherlin.

Emily is survived by her brothers, Samuel Brooks and wife Kassi, South Bend, Nathan Haynes and wife Hailey, Noblesville, and Benjamin Haynes and wife Denise, Cullman, Ala.; and sister Katie Haynes, Danville. Emily leaves behind her loving mother-in-law, Donna Hargett, Greencastle, and sister by marriage, Cassie Shea and husband Cary Shea, Indianapolis. Emily leaves behind several uncles, aunts, cousins and two nephews.

There is a GoFundMe set up, and in lieu of flowers if you wish, you may contribute (Emily Mitchell’s Memorial Service, organized by Cassie Shea for memorial contributions and medical bills).

There will be a celebration of life held on Monday, Jan. 16 at 1 p.m. at New Life Baptist Church in Greencastle with Pastor Tim Tesmer officiating. There will be no visitation prior to service.

It was Emily’s wish to be cremated. Indiana Funeral Care, Indianapolis, has been entrusted with arrangements.
