Thomas, Jorgensen add names to city ballot

Thursday, January 19, 2023

Two more candidates have recently added their names to the list of candidates seeking city office in 2023.

Incumbent Darrel Thomas will seek his first full term on the Greencastle City Council after being elected to the seven-member panel by caucus last February.

Thomas makes the second current GOP councilman to put himself in consideration for one of three Republican at-large nominations in the May 2 primary, joining current Council President Mark Hammer.

Also seeking an at-large nomination, though not appearing on either May primary ballot, will be independent Derek Jorgensen. By filing as an independent, Jorgensen will appear on the Nov. 7 general election ballot.

A Republican primary slate that is steadily filling up includes current city Clerk-Treasurer Lynda Dunbar for mayor, Mikayla Johnson for clerk-treasurer, Hammer and Thomas for at-large seats and Stacie Langdon for Second Ward councilor.

On the Democrat side, Third Ward Councilor Veronica Pejril remains the only primary candidate as she seeks a second term.

City positions on the ballot in May and November include mayor, clerk-treasurer and all seven council seats, including the four wards and three at-large positions.

Those wishing to seek the Republican or Democrat nomination for a municipal office may pick up the needed paperwork at the Putnam County Voter Registration Office on the second floor of the Putnam County Courthouse or under the Secretary of State’s page at www.in.gov.

The Voter Registration Office is open during regular hours of the Putnam County Courthouse, Monday through Friday from 8 a.m.-4 p.m.

All paperwork must be filed with the Voter Registration Office by noon on Feb. 3.

No candidates have filed for any of the contested positions in the towns of Bainbridge, Cloverdale, Fillmore or Roachdale, though most of these have traditionally been composed of independents.

Independents seeking office in the city or towns face a deadline of Monday, July 3 to file paperwork for the general election.
