Ten county wrestlers advance from Avon Sectional; Carrington, Murphy earn sectional titles

After a pair of major decisions, North Putnam's Lucas Murphy made quick work of Avon's Griffan Larson in the final at 170 pounds at the IHSAA Avon Wrestling Sectional Saturday, winning by fall in 33 seconds to earn a sectional title and advance to the Mooresville Regional.

AVON – Putnam County will have 10 representatives at the IHSAA Mooresville Wrestling Regional with Chase Carrington and Lucas Murphy leading the way after winning their weight classes at the IHSAA Avon Wrestling Sectional Saturday.

Greencastle’s Carrington won at 152 pounds while North Putnam’s Murphy picked up the title at 170 pounds. Two other wrestlers, Cougar Braden Glaze and South Putnam’s Ethan Harcourt, made it to the sectional final and finished as runner-up at 160 and 195 pounds respectively.

Brownsburg cruised to a sectional title with 283 team points while the host Orioles were second on 194.5 points, just ahead of Ben Davis on 188 points. North Putnam (89) edged out Greencastle (85) for fourth with Plainfield (69.5) sixth, Pike and Tri-West tied for seventh (63) and South Putnam ninth (56) ahead of Danville (53) and Speedway (33).

Starting with a bye, Murphy won his first two matches by major decision, defeating Plainfield’s Elliot Eck 14-6 and Ben Davis’ Hank Appleman 14-0 to reach the final.

Murphy did not waste time in the final, locking up an early cradle and pinning Avon’s Griffin Larson in just 33 seconds to win a sectional title.

Glaze also started with a bye and picked up falls over Pike’s Divon Jones and South Putnam’s Wyatt Speth, though the latter was a close match through the first two periods. In the final, Glaze lost an 8-4 decision to Ben Davis’ Shaun Raymon to finish second.

Corie Stancombe also advanced to the regional, finishing third at 113 pounds after defeating Speedway’s Sebastian Francisco by major decision 16-5. Kaleb Walton (120) and Trevor Roseboom (285) both finished fifth and will be alternates and the regional.

After receiving a bye, Carrington picked up a quick fall over Danville’s John Henry before nearly running into trouble against Plainfield’s Turner Williams when on the wrong end of throw near the edge of the mat, eventually getting out of the spot and winning by major decision 21-10.

Carrington would defeat Ben Davis’ Gage Eckels in the finals, winning a narrow 3-1 decision to take home a sectional title.

Four other Tiger Cubs will advance to the regional with Cayden Blodgett finishing third at 126 pounds, defeating Avon’s Logan Richardson 4-3 in the first set of tiebreak rounds while Dylan Archer (106), David Olson (120) and Cooper Robinson (132) all finished in fourth place.

Harcourt received a bye to start the day, winning his first bout by fall over Greencastle’s Cameron Mager inside a minute before grinding out a 3-1 win over Speedway’s Miles Miller in the semifinal before being on the wrong end a 20-5 tech fall in the final against Brownsburg’s Gunner Henry.

Speth finished fourth at 160 pounds to advance to the regional while Julian Cox (126), Logan Tomaw (132) and Aiden Beadles (220) each finished fifth and will be alternates at the regional.

Sixth-place finishers at the sectional included North Putnam’s Owen O’Hair (106) and Lucas Murphy (126) and Greencastle’s Tyler Sandusky (145).
