Banner Graphic: How important are sports to you, and what have you learned from them?

Stephanie Morales: “They are super-duper important to me. I use sports to get away from work and stress. I work two jobs right now, but I do that after practice. Sports are an escape for me.”

BG: Talk about you sports.

SM: “I was pretty knew at soccer, starting my sophomore year, and I got better throughout the years. It ended up being one of my favorite sports. It was pretty fun. We had a good season and almost won sectionals. Basketball is something I’ve grown to love. We won sectionals this year, which was my first big win ever, and it was an experience like no other. I love my teammates and I have a great time here. Track is something I do so I don’t stay out of shape. I don’t necessarily like running but I still do it.”

BG: What’s the most embarrassing thing that has happened to you in sports?

SM: “I’ve unintentionally thrown the ball to the other team after rebounds. I’ve just thrown the ball when I see someone. I’ve run the other way when on offense, gotten hit in the face with the ball and fallen over several times in front of people.”

BG: What does your game day routine look like?

SM: “Several of my teammates, Zoe, Evie, Madi and Ali, after school, go to Kroger, get our apples and sandwiches, then go to Evie’s house, eat and watch TV with her dogs. When it gets closer, we drive back over and get ready.”

BG: Have you taken a step back at any point and thought about the sort of history this basketball team is making with the current run it’s on?

SM: “I’m still in awe. This only happened on other time, in 1980. To be a part of that now, as a senior, is so crazy. It doesn’t happen to many teams and I’m happy to be a part of it. No matter the outcome, I feel proud and privileged to be part of such a great team.”

BG: Do you have any favorite college/pro sports teams or athletes you follow?

SM: “No. I don’t really watch TV sports.”

BG: What else do you do at school besides things involving sports?

SM: “I do a bit of everything. I was in band, I have my two jobs at Taco Wapo and Rizzo’s. I’m in Environmental Club, Latin Club, was in French Club, Diversity Club, secretary in Student Council. I like to involve myself in everything.”

BG: What do you like to do outside of school and sports?

SM: “I love being outside, biking, going out in nature on walks with friends or alone.”

BG: What are your favorites in movies, books, TV and music?

SM: “I like watching ‘Outer Banks’ on Netflix.”

BG: Are you a person that wants to watch TV shows and movies, stream something from YouTube, Twitch, TikTok etc. or something else (gaming, reading, etc.)?

SM: “I would probably go over to my mom’s room at chit-chat with her, which is something I do everyday when I get back. My sister then gets involved. I’d then do a puzzle with my mom as that’s one of our favorite things to do.”

BG: What is something you have never done before that you would like to do someday?

SM: “I want to go skydiving.”

BG: What is your biggest fear?

SM: “Probably being in a place where I don’t feel comfortable and have no friends. I don’t like feeling isolated.”

BG: You’ve been placed in charge of making dinner. What’s on the menu?

SM: “I would get the box of Chipotle chicken pasta and make that. And ice cream.”

BG: Do you have any pets?

SM: “I have a goldfish I won three years ago named Fabio.”

BG: If your house were on fire, all living things were already out and you have your keys, cell phone, wallet/purse etc., what is one thing you would go back and get?

SM: “A giant picture of myself in a dress for my quinceanera. It’s my prized possession. I love it.”

BG: If you were to describe your personality in one word, what would that word be and why?

SM: “My friends like to say I’m goofy, so I’’l go with that.:

BG: What has been your favorite place to visit?

SM: “My family lives in Degollado, Jalisco, Mexico and it’s my favorite place to visit on vacation. It’s a blast every time we go down there.”

BG: What was your favorite school field trip?

SM: “Probably the Indianapolis Zoo, back in second grade.”

BG: How important is support from your family and classmates to your success?

SM: “It’s pretty big here. It’s Indiana basketball, of course.”

BG: Describe your overall school experience both academically and athletically.

SM: “Academically, it’s always been pretty good. With sports, things have peaked for me during my senior year.”

BG: If your school was to offer a class it currently doesn’t, what would you want to see taught?

SM: “A gardening class. Learning about plants more in depth. That would be a good one.”

BG: What are your plans for after high school, and what career are you headed toward?

SM: “I’m going to IUPUI to study dentistry and I want to be a dental hygienist.”

BG: Is it difficult to keep up with your school work being an athlete?

SM: “It kind of is, but with good time management, I’m doing good.”

BG: Which particular classes and teachers have helped you the most in high school?

SM: “My AP U.S. History class with Mr. Wilson and my AP Literature class with Ms. Walters. The teachers have been amazing and have really helped me.”

BG: In the future, once you’ve established yourself, if you had your choice, would you want to live somewhere more remote, such as in the mountains or the countryside, somewhere more flashy like down on the beach or in the big city or in the neighborhood?

SM: “Out in the mountains, like in Colorado. That would be so much fun.”

BG: Do you think high school has gone fast, and are you going to miss it?

SM: “It’s going by way too fast and I’m going to miss it. I’ve been dreading the day we graduate because I don’t want to leave.”
