GHS to stage ‘The Diary of Anne Frank’ this week
The tragic tale of a Jewish family hiding from Nazis during the occupation of The Netherlands will come to the stage of the Vickie Parker Auditorium at Greencastle High School this week.
The GHS Drama Department presents “The Diary of Anne Frank,” dramatized by Frances Goodrich and Albert Hackett, on Thursday, March 9 at 7 p.m.; Friday, March 10 at 7 p.m.; and Saturday, March 11 at 2 p.m.
Tickets are $7 for adults, $5 for middle school/high school students and $3 for elementary students and younger children.
The script is based on the book “Anne Frank: The Diary of a Young Girl,” which was published posthumously in 1947. The play premiered at the Court Theatre on Broadway in 1955 and was later adapted into a film in 1959.
The play received the Tony Award for Best Play and was nominated for Best Actress (Susan Strasberg), Best Scenic Design (Boris Aronson), Best Costume Design (Helene Pons) and Best Director (Garson Kanin).
“The Diary of Anne Frank” received the Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 1956. That same year, the play received the New York Drama Critics Circle award for best play.
