CLOVERDALE – South Putnam ran the table Wednesday night to win the Putnam County Middle School Wrestling Meet.

The Eagles had seven individual champions as they defeated hosts Cloverdale in the opening round before sweeping past last year’s champion, Greencastle, and finishing with a evening-high win over North Putnam to close out the night.

“Tonight was great,” South Putnam head coach DC Cook said. “Everyone made me happy.

“I was proud of all the boys. I’m very glad with the work we’ve put in the room because we wanted this bad. We didn’t get it last year and we wanted to get it this year.”

The Tiger Cubs finished as runner-up after defeating the Cougars in a close dual to opening the night while earning six individual titles. North Putnam finished third after defeating the Clovers in the second round, winning six weight classes along the way while Cloverdale had two individual champions on the night.

Wrestling opened with South Putnam taking on Cloverdale, the former winning in the closest of the three duals on the night 65-31, while Greencastle edged out North Putnam 66-54 im the closest of the six duals wrestled.

The Eagles followed up by dethroning the defending champion Tiger Cubs 69-39 while the Cougars defeated the Clovers 66-30.

Round three saw South Putnam cement their winning position with a dominant 84-36 win over North Putnam while Greencastle closed out the night with a 72-42 win over Cloverdale.

“It felt great to get over the hump,” Cook said. “We have five eighth graders that wrestled tonight but our seventh graders really showed up tonight.

“Wrestling is the hardest sport there is, so all the effort they have to give against the second-guessing that goes on is tough but for them to pull through is everything, just like in life. Wrestling is great for these kids and they’re doing nothing but proving me right.”
