The Greencastle Arts Council, in collaboration with the Putnam County Museum, is now accepting submissions to the fourth-annual Putnam County Adult Visual Arts Exhibition. This year’s exhibit will open to the public on July 8 and run through Sept. 22 at the Putnam County Museum, 1105 N. Jackson St., Greencastle. Deadline for submission of artwork is May 14.

To encourage as wide a representation of talent as possible, the call is extended to all adult artists who have lived, worked, studied or were born in Putnam County. In addition to having their work shown at the museum, individuals whose pieces are selected will be considered for multiple cash awards totaling more than $1,000. The first-prize winner also receives two tickets to GAC’s celebratory year-end Bonne Soirée on Nov. 4.

“Each year our countywide exhibit has grown. And each year, it is a pleasure to see, firsthand, how area artists’ work also has grown — and to be introduced to new work by artists with whom we were not acquainted,” said GAC President Suzanne Hassler, who co-chairs this year’s exhibit with board member Lavinia Hale.

“This growth would not have been possible without the uncommon, collaborative relationship we have shared with the Putnam County Museum and its director Lisa Mock,” Hassler continued. “The exhibit could not have grown into the wonderful tradition it has become, if PCM had not been willing to grow with us — and for this unceasing support, we are extremely grateful.”

An important addition to this year’s exhibit is an extension of the annual call for submissions to artists from Putnamville Correctional Facility. Following a recent collaboration between Putnamville, the GAC, 10 Fold Projects gallery and the Indiana University Prison Arts Initiative (IU-PAI), submission fees, matting and framing will be contributed to presenting artwork by any inmate enrolled in the pilot IU-PAI program who wishes to participate in this year’s countywide exhibit.

In advance of the exhibition, the GAC and PCM also will offer a free professional development event to local artists on Saturday, April 29, from 10 a.m.–1 p.m. at the Putnam County Museum. Prior to submitting their applications, participants will have the opportunity to work with photographer Drew Cooper to have their artwork professionally photographed, if needed. To reserve a spot call PCM at 653-8419.

To take part in the exhibit, artists must be 18 years of age or older, and artworks not exceed seven feet in height or width. A $15 application fee includes submission of up to three pieces in the exhibit, a one-year Greencastle Arts Council individual membership and an invitation to the opening artist award reception at the PCM on Saturday, July 8, from 2–5 p.m. If the artist chooses, their work may also be offered for sale.

Interested individuals are asked to submit their applications by the May 14 deadline. They can do so by filling out an online application and paying their submission fee through the GAC website (www.greencastleartscouncil.org), then emailing their images to info@greencastleartscouncil.org. Alternatively, they may pick up a paper application at their local library, follow the instructions provided, and mail the application, along with payment, to the Greencastle Arts Council (PO Box 631, Greencastle, IN 46135).

After the initial review process is completed, participants will be notified and asked to deliver the works that are selected to the Putnam County Museum between 10 a.m.-4 p.m. the week of June 12–16. Additional information can be obtained by visiting the GAC website or contacting info@greencastleartscouncil.org.
