The Greencastle Arts Council’s spring museum caravan will travel to the Swope Museum and History Center in Terre Haute on April 20.

Tickets, which include a behind-the-scenes tour of the Swope collection, lunch at the Federal Café and admission to the Vigo Historical Museum, are $35. Both exhibit spaces are accessible by stairs or elevator.

Travelers will meet at 8:30 a.m. in the Putnam County Museum parking lot at 1105 N. Jackson St. in Greencastle, then caravan together to Terre Haute at 9 a.m., where they will enjoy an in-depth, private tour of the Swope Museum. After viewing the exhibits, the next stop will be the trendy Federal Café for lunch, before heading to the recently established historical museum.

Estimated time of return to Greencastle is 4 p.m.

“The Swope Museum is especially well known for its excellent collection of American art, including American Scene Painting of the 1930s and 1940s, by artists such as Thomas Hart Benton, Edward Hopper and Grant Wood,” said GAC board member Lane Ralph, coordinator of the museum trip. “It also has great depth in historic Indiana art, including work by Hoosier Group artists William Forsyth and T.C. Steele.”

“The Vigo Historical Museum is located in the 34,000-square-feet old Ehrmann family business building — as in Max Ehrmann, author of the ‘Desiderata,’” Ralph noted. “It contains three floors of excellent Central Indiana history displays, highlighting colorful people, places and an illuminating collection of objects.”

Interested individuals may purchase tickets from a GAC board member. Alternatively, they may mail their payment to the Greencastle Arts Council (P.O. Box 631, Greencastle IN 46135). Enter “Museum Trip” in the memo line of the check.
