Artists sought for Greencastle bicentennial mural project

Monday, April 3, 2023

The Putnam County Mural Project is looking for a mural artist or artists to paint the upcoming Bicentennial Mural this September 2023. The mural, which will be painted on the wall of Dick’s Barber Shop in downtown Greencastle, will celebrate the city’s past, present and future with a beautiful work of art.

The selected artist will be provided historical information from a group of local historians who have been engaged through the process. Other Greencastle-related themes and imagery will be provided so the artist can create a visual representation of the community’s 200 years. The Putnam County Mural Project will enlist the help of an artist selection panel, which will be comprised of local community members. Once an artist is selected, the Putnam County Mural Project committee will provide content and style recommendations to the artist, who will be charged to design the mural.

A public vote on two mural design options by the artist will take place this summer.

The Bicentennial Mural is a partnership between the Putnam County Mural Project and the City of Greencastle. The budget for the entire project is $24,750, which includes things like wall prep, insurance, lift rental and UV-protective sealant once the mural is complete. The selected artist will be provided an $8,500 stipend to design and paint the mural.

Artist(s) who have experience in mural creation, lift operation and community engagement are encouraged to apply. Local, state and national artists are being sought through the call for artists application process, which closes April 30.

Any artist who is interested in applying or learning more details about the project requirements can do so by visiting www.putnamcountymuralproject.org.

The Putnam County Mural Project seeks to enrich lives by engaging the community in participatory mural projects that activate space, build artistic capacity and celebrate who we are. To date, the group has installed seven murals across the county and engaged more than 600 students through multiple school partnerships over its tenure.
