CLOVERDALE – Cloverdale’s baseball and softball teams made it 2-for-2 Tuesday after picking up wins at Eminence and home to White River Valley respectively.

The Clover softball team jumped out to a 3-0 lead after an inning, adding multiple runs in each of the next three innings and got through the top of the fifth to snare a 13-3 win over the Wolverines.

“We talked before the game about our approach on offense and getting off to a better start hitting the ball,” Cloverdale head coach Jamie Steffy said. “When (White River Valley) switched pitchers, we struggled a bit and changed our philosophy to more of a bunt and run style, which opened the game up for us while putting pressure on the defense.”

The hosts got their first run when Erin Johnson stole home in the bottom of the first and Paisley Meyerrose doubled the lead with a double to score Keeli Price.

Payton Bell made it 3-0 by singling in Meyerrose while Johnson made it 5-0 in the bottom of the second with a two-run double.

Andrea Nees plated two runs early in the third with a single while back-to-back knocks from Johnson and Price made it 9-0.

Meyerrose brought Price in while Sarah Nichols scored as a courtesy runner to make it 11-0 after three innings.

Nichols scored again in the fourth on a wild pitch while Abi Welton scored of a Sydney Bernard liner for a 13-0 lead.

White River Valley did get its bats going in the fifth as Brynna Walton tripled in a run while Emma Resler singled in a second run and an error allowed a third run to score before Meyerrose finished the game with a punchout.

Meyerrose completed the game in the circle, striking out 11 batters while only allowing five hits and two walks.

“Our philosophy is that we have four pitchers, all of whom bring a different style, velocity and pitch mix to the table,” Steffy said. “I’ve never been one to pitch just one girls and will use two, three, even four in a game.

“The good news is we have a group of pitchers who’ve bought into it. They know when they’re out there they need to give their best and we’ve had two good nights of pitching to start the year.”

Not everything went smoothly in the final inning, something Steffy said was fixable as the team learns to play with big leads.

“I didn’t like our focus at the end,” Steffy noted. “We gave up a couple of runs we shouldn’t have but that’s something we can work on and definitely something we’ll talk about at practice.”
