Greencastle softball continues early roll with Crawfordsville rout; Tiger Cub baseball rocked by Kougars

Sunday, April 9, 2023

Greencastle’s softball team remained hot on a chilly Saturday morning, defeating the visiting Crawfordsville Athenians 12-2 in five innings. Seniors Sidney Lantzy, Emma Hunter and Kenzie Epley combined for 10 of the Tiger Cubs’ 12 hits, a large key to the victory.

Allie Beaman got the start for Greencastle. The Athenians were able to sneak across a couple runs in the opening inning. A leadoff walk and single set the table. Brooklyn Mills would bring in a run on a ground out and Christina Susdorf came in on a wild pitch as the Athenians would go up 2-0.

The Cubs countered with two runs of their own in the bottom half. Four of the first five batters all singled. Sidney Lantzy would score on a wild pitch and Emma Hunter came home on a Gloria Brewer single. It looked as if it would be an even bigger inning, but a couple outs on the basepaths stopped that.

Beaman, after hitting the first batter in the second, retired the next three to keep Crawfordsville at bay. Greencastle picked up a run in the bottom half. Ali Hassler reached on an error and would end up scoring on an RBI single from Lantzy as the Cubs took a lead they would not relinquish.

“The plan was to let Allie (Beaman) pitch one time through the order and give Hasler a little rest. She did just what we needed her to do,” said Tiger Cub coach Amy Coons.

Hassler took the mound in the third and looked strong, allowing only one hit over the next three innings, a single from Celeste Moore the only blemish.

Greencastle added another run in the third. A single from Hunter and a double to the wall from Epley started it off. Brewer drove in her second run of the game with a ground out.

The hosts would break the game open in the bottom of the fourth. A bases loaded single from Hunter brought in one and Epley cleared the bases with a sharp single that went past the left fielder to bring in three to make it 8-2.

Greencastle would finish it off in the fifth. Gracie Means drove in two and Hunter would bring home two more on her fourth hit of the day as the Tiger Cubs went on for the 12-2 victory in five innings.

“We are swinging the bat well and get a couple players back next week. I am really enjoying this team. Last year we seemed on edge all the time, but this year the girls are like ‘we got this’ attitude,” added coach Coons.

Greencastle is now 4-1 on the season. The schedule gets a little tougher with Northview,

Edgewood and South Vermillion coming up before the county tournament Saturday

Hunter went 4-for-4 and drove in three. Lantzy and Epley each were 3-for-3 and combined for four RBIs. Brewer and Means also each drove in two runs each. Hassler pitched three scoreless innings, striking out four and walking none. Beaman also allowed just one hit in her two innings.

Visiting from Wheatfield in northwest Indiana, the Kougars made themselves at home early with four runs in the first inning and put up crooked numbers across all five plate appearances to hand the Tiger Cubs their first loss of the season.

Kankakee Valley was already up 1-0 before recording its first hit, a single that would plate two runs, before a passed ball allowed the fourth run of the game to come in.

Three errors would allow two more runs to score in the second inning before the Kougars manufactured a pair of runs in the third and fourth innings.

Greencastle got its run in the bottom of the fourth after Sam Gooch walked, stole second and was driven in by Ashton Dayhuff.

The visitors finished the game in style with a seven-run fifth inning, driving in four runs on hits while adding three more on a ground out and two bases-loaded walks.

Owen Huff took the loss, pitching three innings and allowing eight runs, five earned, on three hits and four walks, striking out five.

Kankakee Valley’s Dylan Holmes earned the win in four innings of working, allowing a run on three hits while striking out eight.

The Tiger Cubs finished a stroke behind winners Terre Haute North with Zane Huber leading the charge on 79, followed by Sam White on 83, Bryson Worman on 84, Jackson Rodgers on 85 and Cooper Grable on 97.

“The Cubs played consistent golf throughout a challenging wet and windy day,” Greencastle head coach Steve Paquin said. “Zane was the only Cub to have played in a high school tournament and he was playing in his first high school sport this year due to a serious leg condition.

“The course played difficult due to very wet and windy playing conditions. All the Tiger Cubs hit good drives, iron shots, chips and putts, but showed there is room for improvement in all aspects of the game.”
