Clovers split with Bulldogs; Tiger Cubs take down Wolverines in five innings

CLOVERDALE – Trailing 5-0 after three innings and 6-2 after five innings, Cloverdale’s softball team rallied to defeat Monrovia in walk-off fashion 7-6 Monday night.

"We made a few mental mistakes early and allowed Monrovia to get out in front on us but we tightened up on defense and finally got going offensively late in the game,” Cloverdale head coach Jamie Steffy said. "I am proud of these girls.

“We showed some grit, some toughness again tonight. This is the second time now in four games we have battled back late in a game to win.”

Paisley Meyerrose went the distance in the circle, shrugging off 12 hits and six runs, two earned, walking two batters and striking out six across seven innings of play.

A first double and single plated a run for the Bulldogs while an error allowed a second run in to make it 2-0.

Three-straight hits to start the third inning brought in one run while an error and fielder’s choice brought in two more runs as the visitors led 5-0.

The Clovers got their first run of the night on an Andrea Nees single in the fourth but could not convert a second run with the bases loaded and no outs.

A triple and single saw Monrovia push the lead back out to five at 6-1 in the fifth though the hosts would get the run back on a single and three-straight walks, though Cloverdale left the bases loaded again, this time with one out in the inning.

The breakthrough came in the sixth as walks to Sarah Nichols and Abi Welton, along with a single by Sydney Bernard, set up Keeli Price and Meyerrose for back-to-back two RBI singles that tied the game at 6-6.

Erin Johnson would provide the walk-off hit to score Welton in the seventh to complete the comeback.

“With the way our girls can hit and bunt the ball, we keep stressing to them we aren't ever out of games,” Steffy said. “It's about putting pressure on the defense for all seven innings.

"Give Monrovia credit as they took advantage of our mistakes early but we were able to string together some solid hits, mixed in with some really well executed bunt and run situations that we have shown this season so far we can execute really well and to our advantage".

A six-run fifth inning was the key outburst for the Tiger Cubs, who only got six hits Monday night against the Wolverines.

Trevin Long scored the first run of the game with a single in the second while a Sam Gooch groundout in the third plated a second run.

Three-straight walks meant Nathan Sutherlin drove in a run when hit by a pitch while Clark walked in a second run to make it 4-0 after four innings.

A pair of errors allowed two more Greencastle runs in to start the fifth before Sutherlin doubled in two more.

A sac fly from Owen Huff made it 9-0 while Treyten Clark scored on a wild pitch to reach double digits.

Sutherlin shut things down on the mound for the finish, pitching all five innings, allowing three hits and striking out 10 for the win.

The Bulldogs used big hits and a slew of Clover errors to take home a win Monday night.

A quiet game through three innings, Monrovia used back-to-back doubles to plate two runs in the fourth.

A string of errors in the fifth allowed two more runs in for a 4-0 lead before Cloverdale scored its sole run in the sixth when a Mcguire Lee ball to right field was misplayed, allowing Levi Hilton to score.

A two-run home run from Karter Simmons ensured there was no comeback on tap in the seventh.

Landon Duncan took the loss, pitching five innings, allowing four hits, four runs, two earned, and a walk while striking out six.

Darius Compton earned the win with a 17-strikeout performance of seven innings, allowing two hits.
