Stephen W. Sutherlin

Stephen W. Sutherlin, 85, passed away on March 29, 2023, at Hamilton Trace in Fishers.

He was born in Greencastle on May 25, 1937, to Roy and Lenore Sutherlin.

Steve was preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, Kay, who passed away on March 3, 2023.

Steve graduated from DePauw University in 1961 with a Bachelor of Science degree. He was a member of Phi Delta Theta fraternity and was a Golden Legion with more than 50 years as a member. Steve then graduated in 1966 from the Indiana University Robert H. McKinney School of Law with a Juris Doctor degree, achieving a golden career of more than 50 years as an attorney at law.

Steve first started his law practice with Merchants National Bank in the trust department. Later he was in private practice until he joined Stewart & Irwin as a partner and retired from the practice of law as a partner with Bose McKinney & Evans LLP. During Steve’s legal career he served as securities commissioner for the State of Indiana. He was a member of the Indiana Bar Association and the Marion County Bar Association.

He also was very active in the American Cancer Society. Steve was a life member of the Indiana University Alumni Association, and for many years Steve volunteered with SCORE (Counselors to America’s Small Business) on behalf of the small business community.

Steve is survived by three sisters, Nancy Fellers (William) in Carmichael, Calif., Becky Trott (John) in Marianna, Fla., and Sally Harkness in Fishers. He also is survived by his brother-in-law, John Zeiner in Greencastle. Other survivors include several nieces and nephews.

His sister, Rea Zeiner, preceded him in death.

Following cremation at Flanner Buchanan in Carmel, Steve will be interred with his wife in Greencastle in the family plot at Forest Hill Cemetery.

A family celebration of life will be held at 2 p.m. on May 13.
