Both Greencastle’s baseball and softball teams suffered a second-straight loss in WIC play Wednesday as West Vigo left with a pair of wins.

The Vikings dominated the circle and mound, striking out 29 total batters in 13 innings across both fields as the Tiger Cubs fell 8-1 on the softball field and 13-0 on the baseball field in six innings.

Emma Hunter scored the only run for either home team in the top of the first inning with a blast to centerfield off the press box for a 1-0 lead.

West Vigo starter Jaleigh Lindley had her command working otherwise, striking out the other three Tiger Cub batters in the inning and would eventually sit down 17 batters in total.

The Vikings would tie the game in the fourth when Carlea Funk hit a solo home run to center field and Lindley would take the lead for good in the fifth with a solo home run of her own.

Parker Auten extended the lead in the sixth with a three-run home run while a pair of errors allowed a run to score in the seventh before Funk hit a two-run blast to make it 8-1 before Lindley completed the game with three quick outs.

Walks proved to be costly for Greencastle as five of the 10 batters issued free passes scored for West Vigo, including the first two runs of the game as the visitors led 2-0 after an inning of play.

The Vikings tagged on two runs in each of the next two innings, chasing starter Jaylen Bushong after 1 2/3 innings and first reliever Chase Carrington after 1/3 inning.

Jayce Spidel pitched two solid innings to limit the damage in the third and fourth innings but ran into trouble in the fifth as a pair of leadoff doubles saw Trevin Long come in for the rest of the inning, extending the game another inning as West Vigo led 9-0 after five innings.

A pair of walks to start the sixth for Connor Sullivan would eventually see the visitors tag on four more runs.

Ben Kerns largely avoided trouble all afternoon outside the fourth where Greencastle picked up its sole hit of the night on a Treyten Clark double and loaded the bases, only to come away empty handed as the Viking senior pitched five shut out innings with 11 strikeouts. Grayson Porter added a strikeout in an inning of relief.

Baseball

Sullivan 20, North Putnam 9 (6)

The Golden Arrows plated 14 runs across the first three innings on 12 hits, including home runs from Conner McCrary and Tyler Kellett in the first two innings.

Brogan Woodall hit a triple and scored on Brayden Monnett’s single in the first but the Cougars looked to be headed to a five-inning defeat until the offense burst into life in the fourth and fifth innings.

A walk and single set up Chase Barber to drive in a run on a fielder’s choice before a pair of errors plated three runs and a single from Alec McKenzie added a fifth run in the inning to cut the lead to 15-6.

Sullivan added two runs in the fifth but North Putnam extended the game with three runs in the bottom of the frame as Monnett hit a sac fly and Jaylen Windmiller plated a run with a double, later scoring on a wild pitch.

The visitors would seal the deal with three runs in the sixth to take the win as the Cougar offense ran out of runs.

The Cougars took an early 1-0 lead after Emma Williams singled home a run before the Golden Arrows tied the game in the third off a bases-loaded passed ball.

North Putnam took the lead right back when Karyssa Miller grounded into a fielder’s choice to push a run across to make it 2-1.

Sullivan scored twice in the fifth, however, and kept the hosts in check across the remaining three innings to secure the win.

Boys’ Golf

Greencastle 177, West Vigo 187

Zane Huber led the Tiger Cubs with a medalist round of 40, followed by Bryson Worman on 43 and four rounds of 47 shared by Jackson Rodgers, Sam White, Clark Shafer and Dylan Barcus while Cooper Grable was a shot back on 48.

“The Cubs are playing consistent golf, shooting scores in the mid-40s, and lowering their scores as the season moves along,” Greencastle coach Steve Paquin said. “Tiger Pointe is a very difficult course with hills, small fast greens and lots of trees. Karsen Mowrer was the low score for the Vikings with a 42.”
