Greencastle takes two more off Cloverdale; Tiger Cubs sweep Northview on tennis courts

Greencastle followed up its win at the Putnam County Baseball Tournament with another run-rule win over Cloverdale Tuesday.

Nathan Sutherlin drove in the first run of the game with a groundout to bring Chase Carrington home in the first inning while Jaylon Bushong got the scoring going in the second inning with a single to plate Trevin Long.

Carrington forced in a run after being hit by a pitch with the bases loaded while Sam Gooch kept things moving with a single to score Connor Sullivan and Sutherlin added two more RBI with a single to make it 6-0, though the hosts left the bases loaded after a double steal went awry and a fly out ended the inning.

Greencastle would leave the bases loaded again in the third, only getting one run on a Carrington single.

Clark tripled to start the fourth and scored on the same play after an error on the relay before the Tiger Cubs loaded the bases again.

Two wild pitches allowed two runs to score while singles from Owen Huff and Gooch plated two more runs to put the finishing touches on the game.

Clark pitched all five innings in the win, allowing three hits and striking out 10. Landon Duncan took the loss for the Clovers, pitching three innings, allowing nine hits, 11 runs, eight earned, and five walks while striking out three.

Softball

Greencastle 15, Cloverdale 5 (5)

Much like Saturday at the Putnam County Softball Tournament, Greencastle landed a double-digit inning against Cloverdale Tuesday night but needed to play into the bottom of the fifth to pick up a WIC win 15-5.

The Clovers started with a 1-0 lead after Sydney Bernard singled, moved up two bags on wild pitches and scored on an Erin Johnson single.

Sydney Lantzy tied the game immediately in the bottom of the second with a solo home run and the lead was soon in the Tiger Cubs’ hands for good after Gloria Brewer doubled, Emma Hunter singled to plate a run, later stealing two bases and scoring on a Kenzie Epley groundout.

Olivia Richardville started the second with a double, Haley Iseman walked and both runners scored on a Lantzy double to make it 5-1.

Following a Brewer single, Hunter doubled in two more runs before scoring on a wild pitch, as would Epley to make it 9-1.

Iseman singled in two runs to reach double-digits for the game before Lantzy added a third RBI in the inning with a single.

Hunter made it five RBI for the inning with a bases clearing single for the final tallies of the inning before getting caught going for second as the hosts held a 14-1 lead.

A quiet third inning was followed with a a quick two-hit punch from Cloverdale as Andrea Nees singled and Haley Caulkins hit a two-run shot to cut the deficit to 14-3.

The following inning, the Clovers repeated the trick as Johnson walked and Paisley Meyerrose slammed a two-run shot to left field to bring Greencastle back to bat in the fifth.

The Tiger Cubs finalized the run-rule win with three quick at bats as Hunter singled, Epley drew a walk and Hassler dropped a fly ball inside the right field line, allowing Hunter to score to end the contest.

Iseman took the win in the circle, pitching four innings, allowing three runs on seven hits with four strikeouts. Callie Smith took the loss, pitching an inning, allowing eight runs on eight hits and a walk.

The two teams had contrasting fortunes on Monday as Cloverdale defeated Indian Creek 6-2 while Greencastle lost to Cascade 12-0 in six innings.

Against the Braves, the Clovers got off to a 1-0 start after Sydney Bernard led off with a walk and scored on a passed ball.

A pair of Brave errors allowed Callie Smith to score in the second inning while Keeli Price drove in a run in the third, scoring Erin Johnson with a single.

After Indian Creek scored a run in the fourth and fifth, Cloverdale tacked on three runs in the bottom of the fifth as Price singled in a run and Caulkins notched a hit to help another run score.

Smith was able to coral the Braves from there, scattering four hits and two walks over seven innings, allowing two runs and striking out six to get the win.

The Tiger Cubs got three hits from Sydney Lantzy but failed to make the most of any of the base appearances.

Any time the hosts got a glimpse of potential going, Cadet pitcher Megan Walker shut it down, recording 11 strikeouts on the afternoon.

A pair of home runs from Grace Gray and a Tara Gruca blast helped to plate five runs for the visitors, who scored five runs in the fourth to make it 9-0 but needed a sixth inning, where they scored three runs, to get the job done.

A late seven-run burst from the Vikings turned a 4-2 Cougar lead into a 9-4 loss Tuesday.

West Vigo scored two runs on a Parker Auten double in the first inning and the game remained 2-0 until the fourth.

Kyndal Brewer walked to start the frame and Emma Williams tied the contest with a two-run home run.

Mackenzie Mason drew a walk, moved to third on a Bailee Pride double and both scored on wild pitches to give the visitors a 4-2 advantage.

The Vikings’ big bats finally came to the fore in the sixth as Caprice McCallister doubled, Janelle Sullivan tripled and Grace Rodgers hit a two-run home run to give the hosts a 5-4 lead.

A single, error and double from Jaleigh Lindley added two more runs before Auten plated two more with a single to complete the turnaround.

The Vikings did all the damage they needed to in the first three innings, hitting the Cougars up for five runs in the first inning and six more in the third to breeze through in five innings.

Brogan Woodall collected both North Putnam hits on the night while Ian Patrick reached on a walk.

Nolan Augusta took the loss, allowing 12 hits and 12 runs, 11 earned.

Levi Hilton scored the lone Clover run in the third inning with a solo home run, taking the loss with four innings on the mound, allowing eight hits, eight runs, two earned and two walks while striking out three.

In the second trip in as many days to Putnam County, the Braves held the Eagles to three hits in a run-rule win Tuesday afternoon.

Ethan Harcourt had two hits and Hayden Tincher added a single for South Putnam. Ashton Nichols took the loss, going 5 1/3 innings, giving up 11 walks and nine runs, six earned, allowing only one hit and striking out three.

The Tiger Cubs only dropped one set against the Knights Monday afternoon.

Allie Landry cruised through her match at No. 1 singles against Samantha Hendrick 6-0, 6-0 while Maddie Landry was a 6-1, 6-1 winner over Martina Sutherland at No. 2 singles and Addie Fowley won 6-2, 6-3 over Caroline Koositra at No. 3 singles.

Caroline Gooch and Sophie Riggle won 6-4, 6-1 at No. 1 doubles over Katie Boor and Kambree James while Liberty Amis and Bella Monnett had to rally from a set down to defeat Addie Bowman and Ariella Engle at No. 2 doubles, winning 4-6, 6-4, 10-3 to complete the sweep.
