Cougars hand Knights first loss in WIC baseball

A six-run fourth inning was the deciding blow for the Cougars against the Knights, handing the visitors their first WIC loss of the year.

Northview led 2-0 after runs in the first while North Putnam got its first run in the third on a Brayden Monnett single.

The crucial moment came an inning later as the Cougars started with a pair of walks and a single to load the bases.

Chase Barber hit a sac fly liner to plate the first run before a single reloaded the bases. A fielder’s choice back to the pitcher threatened to cut the rally short but the hosts stayed patient and reaped the rewards.

Brayden Monnett and Jaylen Windmiller both drew walks to force runs in before a balk allowed Kaden Helderman to score. Brogan Woodall scored on a passed ball while Braxton Woodall forced home another run with a walk while courtesy runner Brody Kinkead scored on a passed ball for the sixth run of the inning.

Windmiller cruised from there on the mound, allowing two runs on four hits and a walk while striking out 10.

The Patriots held the Tiger Cub offense to four hits after starting with a 2-0 lead after the first, ramping up the runs in the fourth and fifth inning.

Greencastle got its first run in the third after Chase Carrington and Sam Gooch led off with singles, the former scoring on an error to make it a 3-1 game. Treyten Clark doubled home the other Tiger Cub run in the fifth.

Edgewood 8, South Putnam 2

After falling behind 3-0, the Eagles cut the lead to 3-2 in the second but the Mustangs added on to the lead quickly to pick up the win Wednesday.

A single by Cam Bozell, the only hit for the visitors on the night, and two walks loaded the bases for Isayah Hardwick in the second, who reached on an error that allowed a run to score.

Wyatt Mullin added a sac fly to plate a second run but South Putnam could not add to the tally and saw Edgewood add to the lead through the fifth inning.

Kyle Glasson took the loss, allowing seven runs, four earned, on five hits and six walks in four innings of work.

A 2-0 start and 6-0 lead after three were enough for the Patriots, who added runs in the fifth and sixth to claim an early win over the Clovers Tuesday.

Cloverdale collected two of its three hits in the fourth as a walk and singles from Mcguire Lee and Drake Hoffa loaded the bases with Ben Campbell hitting a sac fly to plate the hosts’ sole run.

Landon Duncan took the loss, allowing six runs on five hits and three walks, striking out three in 2 1/3 innings of work.

Greencastle 8, Owen Valley 1

After Tuesday’s loss to North Putnam, the Tiger Cubs racked up 17 hits against the Patriots while only allowing six total base runners for the hosts Wednesday.

Greencastle started with four singles around a double play, getting a 1-0 lead after Emma West brought in Allie Beaman.

Sydney Lantzy plated Elise Lausee in the second with a double while Haley Iseman brough home Emma Hunter in the third for a 3-0 lead.

The Tiger Cubs finally made the hits pay off in the sixth as Lausee scored on an Olivia Richardville single before Lantzy blasted a three-run home run to make it 7-0.

Owen Valley got its run in the sixth off a walk, wild pitch, error and sac fly but the visitors added an insurance run in the seventh as Richardville drove in her second run of the night.

Ali Hassler struck out seven in the win while allowing two hits and four walks.

The Mustangs pounded out 13 hits while taking advantage of six walks to knock down the Eagles Wednesday.

After a 1-0 start for the visitors following a Lilah Holderfield sac fly to bring in Danae Cline, Edgewood scored four in the bottom of the first and scored in all five innings.

South Putnam forced the hosts to bat in the fifth after scoring twice in the top half of the inning as Cline doubled to bring in two runs but three-straight singles ended the game.

Jaicee Jackson took the loss, allowing 12 runs, five earned) on 10 hits and six walks.

Eleven runs in the fourth turned a close game into a rout for the Golden Arrows Tuesday, who only allowed a hit to the hosts Eagles through Chlara Pistelli.

Sullivan had manufactured runs in the first, second and third innings before a combination of eight hits and four errors allowed the visitors to plate 11 runs.

Alyssa Pingleton took the loss, allowing 15 runs. four earned, on 15 hits.

The Tiger Cubs put together a strong round on Monday but the Braves were slightly better at all four scoring positions to get the win at Tiger Pointe CC.

Bryson Worman led the hosts with a round of 38, followed by Sam White on 41, Zane Huber on 42 and Jackson Rodgers on 46. Cooper Grable shot 47 while Dylan Barcus carded a 48 and Clark Shafer shot 54.

“This was the Tiger Cubs’ lowest score of the year and showed the continued improvement of this young and inexperienced team,” Greencastle head coach Steve Paquin said. “The Braves played consistent throughout their lineup, which made the difference in the match. The Cubs lost for the first time in dual and tri-meets this year.”

The Tiger Cub boys had three double winners Tuesday in Cole Hutcheson in the 100-meter dash (11.44) and high jump (5-06), beating out teammates Cody Evans and Garret Cooper, who also cleared 5-06 on jumps, along with Charlie Menzel in the 1,600-meter (4:48.16) and 3,200-meter (10:08.80) runs and Brendle Brennan in the 100-meter hurdles (16.52) and long jump (18-09.75). Andrew Adams also picked up an individual win in the pole vault (9-06).

Both runners also helped win relays as Greencastle won the 400-meter relay (45.27) through Hutcherson, Dylan Olson, Clay Glessner and Jake Miller while Menzel helped win the 3,200-meter relay (9:28.13) alongside Josh Rumple, Sam Hanlon and Landon Miller.

The Tiger Cub girls found their success in the field, winning four of the five events, through Skyler Byrd in the pole vault (8-00), Isabella Parker in long jump (14-07.25), Sheyenne Graham in shot put (26-09.50) and Lilly Barnhart in discus (97-02). Kyra Bandy picked up the lone track win, claiming the 100-meter hurdles (17.47).

Parke Heritage, Riverton Parke at North Putnam

Girls: North Putnam 61.5, Parke Heritage 59, Riverton Parke 32.5

A razor-thin girls’ meet went the way of the hosts Tuesday with Callee Riggle winning at both discus (87-00) and shot put (32-02.50). Other individual winners included Kassidy Hackleman at long jump (14-11.50), Addi Osburn in the 200-meter dash (30.0), Jenna Day in the 800-meter run (2:37) and Jacy Huffman in the 3,200-meter run (14:03).

The Cougars also won the 3,200-meter relay (12:07) through Day, Melanie Davies, Brooke Hensley and Maddie Trent.

North Putnam won 11 of 15 events on the boys’ side to cruise to a win with Nolan Hackleman doubling up in the 400-meter dash (51.8) and long jump (20-10.50).

Other individual winners included Myles Bryan in the 100-meter dash (11.94), Corie Stancombe in the 800-meter run (2:12), Brayden Monnett in the 1,600-meter run (4:57), Elijah Harless in the 3,200-meter run (11:27), Matthew Barnett at shot put (34-09.50) and Jacob Shorter at discus (101-07).

The Cougars also claimed all three relays through the 400-meter relay team (47.3) of Bryan, Paxton O’Brien, Myckah Slagle and Coby Galloway, then 1,600-meter relay team (3:43.2) of Hackleman, Monnett, Slagle and Matt Farrington and the 3,200-meter relay team (9:23) of Monnett, Bryan, Stancombe and Evan Polley.
