Greenlee resigns as Greencastle girls’ basketball coach
At Monday’s Greencastle School Board meeting, Tiger Cub girls’ basketball head coach Doug Greenlee had his resignation from the position accepted.
Greenlee coached the girls’ basketball team for two seasons, compiling a 29-23 record, including a 23-5 mark in the 2022-23 season, which included wins in the Putnam County Tournament, the Jenni Marietta State Farm Classic, the Greencastle Sectional and Southmont Regional, making an appearance at the Shelbyville Semi-State.
“First of all, I was really excited to get the chance to coach the girls the last two years,” Greenlee said. “It was a lot of fun but the commitment of being a head coach and fulltime athletic director is difficult with the amount of time, hours and days you spend with both.
“At this time in my career, I need to slow down a little bit, not a lot, but it was the driving force behind the decision.”
Greenlee’s hiring initially came about after not being able to nail down a hire after the resignation and departure of former head coach Kellie Kirkhoff, who had accepted the same position at Whiteland in May of 2021.
With the 2021-22 school year fast approaching and the school unable to match with a coach with the teaching positions available, Greenlee stepped in to take the position.
With an extra month to work with, Greenlee said there was a good chance of avoiding a repeat occurrence but added there were things to iron out with the position formally opened this week.
“That’s a good question and there is still some uncertainty as to what will happen,” Greenlee noted about how confident the school was in filling the position given the added time. “Interviews will start soon and, depending on where things take us, we’ll follow up and see what happens.
“There’s a lot of undecided questions we haven’t discussed yet.”
Greenlee also pointed out that, while he was in a unique position of being the athletic director that would be involved in the search while being the departing coach, Greencastle would have a team that would help with the process in order for things to go smoothly.
“I’ll have some input but we’ll also have a small committee of administrators helping me go through the applicants,” Greenlee said. “We’ll figure out who to call in for interview and it’ll be a team approach to that next hire.”
