Tiger Cubs get run-rule wins in baseball, softball; track teams get in final runs before county meet

Greencastle 11, North Central 1 (5)

The Tiger Cubs scored five times in the first inning Friday as part of a run-rule win over the Thunderbirds.

Nathan Sutherlin plated the first two runs of the game with a single, later scoring on a Treyten Clark single. Boyd Ensley drove in two more runs with a single for a 5-0 start.

Sam Gooch scored on an error in the second inning while Clark plated two runs in the fourth on a single and Ethan Hamm forced a run in after being plunked with the bases loaded.

After North Central scored in the top of the fifth, Greencastle closed the game out after a Sutherlin ground out forced in a run before Gooch scored on a wild pitch to make it a 10-run game.

A seven-run fourth inning was the big blow for the Cadets, who eventually finished off the Cougars in six innings Thursday.

North Putnam was able to score a run in the fourth after Alec McKenzie plated Brayden Monnett with a single to make it 3-1 but a seven-run bottom of the inning saw Cascade take control for the remainder of the outing.

Parke Heritage 5, Cloverdale 3

The Clovers closed a 4-0 gap to 4-3 but couldn’t find a way to get in front and fell to the Wolves Thursday.

Parke Heritage scored a run in each of the first two innings before adding two in the fourth inning.

Cloverdale answered in the bottom of the fifth with a two-out rally as Levi Hilton scored on a passed ball and Drake Hoffa plated two runs on a single but the offense couldn’t find a route back in as the visitors scored in the sixth and held on for the win.

Softball

The Tiger Cubs scored 16 runs in the final two innings, outpacing their hit total by a 2-to-1 margin while the host Chargers only had two hits Saturday morning.

Scoring started early with an Allie Beaman double plating one run before stealing home to make it 2-0 after an inning of play.

Sydney Lantzy tripled to lead off the third and scored while Beaman took home and Haley Iseman and Elise Lausee drove in runs to make it 6-0.

Emma Hunter had an RBI single to get the 10-run fourth inning up and running while Iseman and Lausee were plunked with the bases loaded to force in two more runs.

Emma West stole home before Lantzy plated two with a single. Ali Hassler took home plate, as would Lantzy, before Gracie Means plated two with a double to make it 16-0.

Lantzy doubled home the first run of the fifth while Makenzie Creviston and Lantzy stole home.

Means added two more runs on a single before Hayley Owens brought home the final run on a groundout.

Four runs in the second inning and seven more in the third inning put the Cougars in a commanding position Friday night.

Kylie Rust doubled to start the second and scored on a wild pitch before Ashlynn Stacks singled to plate a second run.

Bylie Schmitz doubled to plate two more runs to give North Putnam a 4-0 lead.

The following inning, the visitors took advantage of errors to score four runs with Bailee Pride and Hailee Daigle scoring on wild pitches and Kyndal Brewer driving in a run with a double.

Pride would score on another wild pitch in the fourth while Hailee Daigle drove in a run to help secure the run-rule win.

Two big innings saw the Eagles take the lead twice and hold off a late rally from the Thunderbirds Friday night.

South Putnam started the game with a 3-0 lead as Lilah Holderfield doubled home two runs, later scoring on an Alyssa Pingleton single.

North Central pulled a run back in the first and scored three runs in the second to take a 4-3 lead into the fifth inning.

Peyton Freeman tied the game with a single with Danae Cline pushing the visitors back in front by a run.

Holderfield plated two more runs in the next at-bat to give the Eagles a 7-4 lead which held up despite the Thunderbirds scoring a run in the final two innings.

Greencastle’s girls had a second-place finish at the relays Friday in discus as Lilly Barnhart finished third overall and Sheyenne Graham placed sixth overall in the event. Three third-place finishes came in the pole vault, long jump and shot put.

The Tiger Cubs had three third-place finishes in the boys’ event in the 1,600-meter run, the 3,200-meter run and the long jump.

Athenian Relays

Boys: North Putnam (6/6) 60.5

Nolan Hackleman and Matt Farrington provided a top finish for the Cougar boys Thursday, finishing first (20-08.50) and third (18-07.75) respectively in the long jump while Myckah Slagle finished second in the 110-meter hurdles (17.21).

Callee Riggle finished second overall in the shot put (33-07.50) with Mackinley Lawson fourth in the event (29-03) while the sprint medley team of Riley Huffman, Addi Osburn, Natalie McCartney and Brooke Hensley finished second (2:03.43).

Greenwood Christian, Monrovia at South Putnam

The Eagles had four winners in a competitive meet Thursday with Wyatt Switzer winning the 300-meter hurdles (41.1), Fisher Jones winning high jump (5-11), Khalil Jefferson winning the long jump (18-09) and the team of Dunkin York, Evan Hinkle, Gabe Feltner and Keaton Chew winning the 3,200-meter relay (9:31).

Jasmine Guzman finished second in the 100-meter dash (13.2) while the 3,200-meter relay team of Lilly Emmerich, Kelsey Custis, Stevie Keenan and Elise Kendall finished second (12:42.7) for the top finishes among the Eagle girls.

Cascade, Cloverdale at Tri-West

The Clover boys picked up a win on the night Thursday as Tayt Jackson won the 300-meter hurdles (41.93).

Cloverdale found three wins in the girls’ meet with Emily Mann winning the pole vault (7-06), Daphanie Geiger won the 800-meter run (2:48.78) and Abigail Nees won the 1,600-meter run (6:14.03).

Martinsville at Greencastle

Boys: Greencastle 79, Martinsville 52

Girls: Martinsville 66, Greencastle 57

The Tiger Cub boys had three double winners Tuesday in Cole Hutcheson in the 100-meter dash (11.44) and high jump (5-06), beating out teammates Cody Evans and Garret Cooper, who also cleared 5-06 on jumps, along with Charlie Menzel in the 1,600-meter (4:48.16) and 3,200-meter (10:08.80) runs and Brendle Brennan in the 100-meter hurdles (16.52) and long jump (18-09.75). Andrew Adams also picked up an individual win in the pole vault (9-06).

Both runners also helped win relays as Greencastle won the 400-meter relay (45.27) through Hutcherson, Dylan Olson, Clay Glessner and Jake Miller while Menzel helped win the 3,200-meter relay (9:28.13) alongside Josh Rumple, Sam Hanlon and Landon Miller.

The Tiger Cub girls found their success in the field, winning four of the five events, through Skyler Byrd in the pole vault (8-00), Isabella Parker in long jump (14-07.25), Sheyenne Graham in shot put (26-09.50) and Lilly Barnhart in discus (97-02). Kyra Bandy picked up the lone track win, claiming the 100-meter hurdles (17.47).

Parke Heritage, Riverton Parke at North Putnam

A razor-thin girls’ meet went the way of the hosts Tuesday with Callee Riggle winning at both discus (87-00) and shot put (32-02.50). Other individual winners included Kassidy Hackleman at long jump (14-11.50), Addi Osburn in the 200-meter dash (30.0), Jenna Day in the 800-meter run (2:37) and Jacy Huffman in the 3,200-meter run (14:03).

The Cougars also won the 3,200-meter relay (12:07) through Day, Melanie Davies, Brooke Hensley and Maddie Trent.

North Putnam won 11 of 15 events on the boys’ side to cruise to a win with Nolan Hackleman doubling up in the 400-meter dash (51.8) and long jump (20-10.50).

Other individual winners included Myles Bryan in the 100-meter dash (11.94), Corie Stancombe in the 800-meter run (2:12), Brayden Monnett in the 1,600-meter run (4:57), Elijah Harless in the 3,200-meter run (11:27), Matthew Barnett at shot put (34-09.50) and Jacob Shorter at discus (101-07).

The Cougars also claimed all three relays through the 400-meter relay team (47.3) of Bryan, Paxton O’Brien, Myckah Slagle and Coby Galloway, then 1,600-meter relay team (3:43.2) of Hackleman, Monnett, Slagle and Matt Farrington and the 3,200-meter relay team (9:23) of Monnett, Bryan, Stancombe and Evan Polley.

Girls’ Tennis

The Tiger Cubs saw off the Athenians across all five positions Thursday with several competitive matches along the way.

Allie Landry defeated Sam Rohr at No. 1 singles 6-3, 6-1, with Maddie Landry winning at No. 2 singles over Reagan Cox 6-2, 6-2 and Addie Fowler winning over Emily Weliever at No. 3 singles 7-5, 7-5.

Caroline Gooch and Sophie Riggle defeated Mia Wagner and Elyse Widmer 6-3, 6-3 at No. 1 doubles while Liberty Amis and Bella Monnett won a super tiebreak over Olivia Fichter and Amy Weliever at No. 2 doubles 2-6, 6-4, 10-6.

The following afternoon, Greencastle fell in WIC play to the Golden Arrows with Allie Landry winning at No. 1 singles over Hannah Burkhart 6-3, 6-1 and Gooch and Riggle defeating Sarah Francis and Maggie McCammon at No. 1 doubles 6-3, 6-4.

Maddie Landry fell to Paige Chickadaunce at No. 2 singles 7-5, 6-3, Fowler lost to Ally McKinney at No. 3 singles 6-2, 6-0 and Amis and Monnett fell 6-0, 6-3 to Ella King and Parker Mischler at No. 2 doubles.

Zane Huber shot 42 to lead the Tiger Cubs Wednesday at Quail Creek with Jackson Rodgers shooting 44, Bryson Worman and Sam White carding 47s, Clark Shafer shooting 48, Dylan Barcus coming in on 49 and Cooper Grable shooting 54.

“The course was new for the Cubs as none of the current players had ever played the nine holes that was played,” Greencastle head coach Steve Paquin noted. “The course played difficult with large sloping and fast greens while the Bruins had an experienced veteran team that played well on the home course.”
