Tiger Cub tennis continues roll with wins over Mounties, Eagles

Allie Landry and Greencastle picked up a pair of wins to start the week as the Tiger Cubs defeated Southmont and Brown County by 4-1 scorelines Tuesday and Wednesday. Landry defeated Mountie Hanna Long 6-1, 6-3 and Eagle Anna Stogsdill 6-1, 6-3 at No. 1 singles.

Greencastle continued its superb girls’ tennis campaign Tuesday and Wednesday with a pair of wins over Southmont and Brown County, winning both matches by 4-1 scorelines.

Inclement weather postponed the first match of the week on Monday against Indian Creek to next week, leaving the Mounties as the first opponent this week on Tuesday.

Allie Landry defeated Hanna Long at No. 1 singles 6-1, 6-3 while Maddie Landry won 6-3, 6-0 at No. 2 singles over Marley Jones.

Caroline Gooch and Sophie Riggle blanked Courtlyn Carpenter and Olivia Surface 6-0, 6-0 at No. 1 doubles while Liberty Amis and Bella Monnett won at No. 2 doubles over Haylee Hall and Jozee Jones 6-3, 7-5.

Southmont’s win came at No. 3 singles in a three-set battle as Kela Johnson was able to best Addie Fowler 6-3, 4-6, 6-3.

Wednesday, the Tiger Cubs ran their WIC record to 4-1 with a win over a competitive Eagle team with Allie Landry easing past Anna Stogsdill 6-1, 6-3 at No. 1 singles and Gooch and Riggle winning 6-3, 6-2 over Londyn Koester and Katie Tipton at No. 1 doubles.

The other three matches were hard-fought wins for the hosts as Maddie Landry won 6-4, 6-4 over Anna Tipton at No. 2 singles and Fowler won in a super tiebreak over Julie Burt at No. 3 singles 7-5, 2-6, 11-9.

Brown County’s win came at No. 2 doubles in a three-set bout as Avy Kelly and Cady Kemp were able to outlast Amis and Monnett 6-3, 3-6, 6-4.

Baseball

Edgewood 10, Greencastle 1

The Mustangs closed strong Tuesday, scoring eight runs across the final three innings to defeat the Tiger Cubs, who scored their only run in the sixth after Trevin Long was hit by a pitch, moved up two bags on passed balls and scored on a Treyten Clark single.

Both teams scored three runs through the first half of Wednesday’s contest before having chances to win in the 10th inning.

The Braves took a 1-0 lead after three innings, one that lasted two batters as Nathan Sutherlin doubled before Treyten Clark hit a two-run home run to take a 2-1 lead.

Indian Creek tied the game in the bottom half of the fourth before Greencastle took the lead back in the top of the fifth when Sutherlin singled to plate Chase Carrington.

The hosts scored in the bottom of the fifth and a stalemate soon developed until the 10th inning.

With two outs, Sutherlin drew a four-pitch walk, Clark was intentionally walked and Long drew a walk to load the bases but a groundout ended the threat.

Two errors allowed Indian Creek to get batters on and after an intentional walk, Talan Steinway singled to bring in the winning run.

South Putnam 7, Brown County 4

The visiting Eagles rallied after seeing a 3-1 lead turn into a 4-3 deficit, scoring twice in the sixth and seventh innings to beat their Eagle counterparts Wednesday.

After falling behind 1-0 after two innings, South Putnam scored three in the top of the third on a Kenny McDaniel groundout and singles by Ethan Harcourt and Cam Bozell.

After Brown County scored a run in the fourth and two in the fifth to take the lead, the visitors answered back as singles from Isayah Hardwick and Hayden Tincher brought in runs in the sixth while Tyler Fulford brought in two insurance runs in the seventh to help secure the win.

The Patriots jumped out to a 2-0 lead and led 3-1 into the fifth where the Cougar bats notched three runs, doing so again in the sixth, to take the win back home Tuesday night.

Hailee Daigle drove in the first North Putnam run in the second with a single but the big damage came off the bat of Emma Williams in the fifth and sixth.

Williams started with a three-run home run after a Brilye Schmitz double and Kyndal Brewer single beforehand, adding a two-run shot in the sixth.

Ashlynn Stacks drove in the other Cougar run but was thrown out going for third before Williams’ second blast of the game.

The Tiger Cub offense was held to three hits Wednesday by Delaney Jones, who fanned 12 batters in six innings, Sydney Lantzy had two of the three hits and Haley Iseman had a double.
