Mitchell David Thacker Sr., 80, of Greencastle, passed away April 27, 2023, at 207 a.m. at Putnam County Hospital.

He was born Oct. 10, 1942, in Martinsville, the son of Paul David Thacker and Anna Bell Smith.

He graduated from Ben Davis High School and later attended Thomas R. White School, where he received a certificate of accomplishment for automotive technology in 1968, as well as a certificate of accomplishment for drafting in 1971. Mitchell also obtained his certification of real estate in 1992.

Mitchell was lifetime member of American Legion Post 58. He owned his own company, Thacker and Sons Fire Protection and Design, as well as worked for Korsen Fire & Security.

Mitchell was an architect and also a drafter, and was well known to be a jack of all trades. There was nothing he wasn’t able to master.

He enjoyed hiking, artwork, telling stories, country rides, wood whittling, softball, dancing, traveling, canoe trips, antiquing, four-wheel off-roading and many other outdoor activities with his family and friends.

Survivors include his wife, Phyllis Shoemaker; their beloved dog, Sugar; his children, Rick Thacker (Stephanie) of Mishawaka, Mitchell Thacker Jr. (Donna) of Plainfield, Tom Thacker of Cloverdale, Ron Thacker (Wendy) of Brazil, Tonda Hinton (James) of Brazil, Theresa Frank of New Palestine and Robert Thacker (Brenda) of Brazil. He also has 25 grandchildren and 33 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his sisters, Aloma Gray of Floral City, Fla., and Jackie (Kenny) of Martinsville; as well as the mother of his children, Anita Thacker of Greencastle; and many nieces, nephews and great-nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Aloha; and two grandchildren, Destiny and Michael.

Services were held Monday, May 1 at Bittles & Hurt Funeral Home. Burial followed in Schultz Cemetery in Martinsville. Visitation was also held on May 1 at the funeral home.
