Hackleman grabs three wins, helps North Putnam to fourth place at THN Boys' Track Sectional
TERRE HAUTE – Behind another three-win night from Nolan Hackleman, North Putnam finished fourth at Thursday’s IHSAA Terre Haute North Boys’ Track Sectional.
The Cougars finished on 62 points, 12 ahead of fifth-place Greencastle on 50 points. South Putnam finished eighth on 37 points and Cloverdale 10th on 15 points.
Terre Haute South won the sectional on 122.5 points with the hosts Patriots second on 105.5 points and Northview third on 88 points.
Sullivan finished sixth on 46 points with South Vermillion edging out the Eagles for seventh place with 38 points and West Vigo taking ninth, two points back on 35 points.
Parke Heritage finished 11th on 11 points with Clay City 12th and North Central and Riverton Parke in a tie for 13th place.
Hackleman won two individual events, winning the 400-meter dash (50-82) and the long jump (20-11) with teammate Matt Farrington finishing second in the long jump (20-08.25).
The pair also helped win the 1,600-meter relay (3:30.57) to close the meet alongside Myckah Slagle and Brayden Monnett.
Another sectional title was won by Greencastle’s Andrew Adams, winning the pole vault (11-06) on jumps after clearing the winning height on the first attempt.
South Putnam’s Wyatt Switzer was .01 from adding a fifth sectional title to the Putnam County haul, finishing runner-up in the 110-meter hurdles to Northview’s Cain Garrison (15.67-15.68) and later finished runner-up to Garrison in the 300-meter hurdles (40.93) with Cloverdale’s Tayt Jackson finishing third (42.49) to also qualify for next week’s regional.
In another close finish, North Putnam’s Jeremiah Miles beat out Greencastle’s Landon Miller for third in the 1,600-meter run (4:39.32-4:39.46) though Miller will likely also compete at the regional in the event. Miller will compete in the 3,200-meter run after finishing third in the event (10:11.45).
Greencastle’s Lamar Moore finished third in the 200-meter dash (23.44) while Cole Hutcheson finished third in the high jump (6-00) to qualify for nest week’s regional, as did South Putnam’s Ben Teipen at discus (132-06.75).
North Putnam will have a second relay at the regional as the 3,200-meter team of Monnett, Miles, Evan Polley and Corie Stancombe finished third at the sectional (8:31.91).
In addition to the above placers, three other athletes and three relays will likely advance to the Bloomington North Regional next Thursday.
The top-three athletes in each event advance to the regional round with the next four best times, heights or distances from the four sectionals that feed into the regional qualifying so that each event has 16 participants barring any ties that would increase the field.
Including Miller in the 1,600-meter run, Greencastle’s Brendle Brennan finished fourth in the 110-meter hurdles (16.19) while South Putnam’s Hayden Meredith finished sixth in the high jump (5-10).
The Tiger Cubs and Eagles will also likely have relays competing at the regional as Greencastle 300-meter relay team of Hutcheson, Dylan Olson, Clay Glessner and Jake Miller finished fourth (45.33), as did the 1,600-meter relay team of Glessner, Hutcheson, Miller and Moore (3:34.96) while South Putnam’s 3,200-meter relay team of Gabe Feltner, Dunkin York, Evan Hinkle and Keaton Chew finished fourth (8:35.25).
Other placement finishes on Thursday included sixth-place finishes for North Putnam’s Myles Bryan in the 200-meter dash (23.99) and Farrington in the 400-meter dash (53.84), Cloverdale’s Tyson Bridges in the 110-meter hurdles (16.53) and the 1,600-meter relay team of Jackson, Bridges, Jaxton Helton and Scottie Mcguire (3:43.30), seventh-place finishes for North Putnam’s Miles in the 3,200-meter run (10:39.01), South Putnam’s Fisher Jones in the high jump (5-08) and Cloverdale’s 400-meter relay team of Jackson, Bridges, Helton and Mcguire (46.78) and eighth-place finishes for Greencastle’s Daniel Dinn in the 800-meter run (2:16.41) and the 3,200-meter relay team of Dinn, Sam Hanlon, Josh Rumple and Anthony Peters (9:45.07), South Putnam’s Chew in the 3,200-meter run (10:40.58) and Teipen at shot put (43-08) and Cloverdale’s Harrison Tyler in the pole vault (10-00).
