NEW MARKET – A promising start for Greencastle soured very quickly against South Vermillion in the first semifinal of IHSAA Softball Class 2A Sectional No. 44 play Tuesday.

Yet despite trailing 7-3 after two innings, the Tiger Cubs scratched out a pair of runs in the middle innings and kept themselves afloat but could not come all the way back, falling 7-5.

Greencastle started off brightly after singles from Sydney Lantzy and Gloria Brewer set up Emma Hunter for a two-RBI double.

A pair of errors allowed Hunter to eventually score as the Tiger Cubs batted through the order in the top of the first.

South Vermillion answered with five runs in the bottom of the inning as two walks and a single loaded the bases.

Ava Watson hit into a fielder’s choice for a run and no out with a walk to Caledonia Coleman forcing a second run in and a passed ball tying the score at 3-3.

Rosie Travioli doubled to plate two more runs as the Wildcats moved ahead 5-3 after the first inning.

A trio of errors allowed South Vermillion to tack on two more runs as Hannah Boardman singled in a run with an error allowing a second run to score, giving the Wildcats a 7-3 lead after two innings.

After two scoreless innings, the Tiger Cubs pulled a run back in the fifth as Elise Lausee reached on an error, took both second and third and scored on Haley Iseman’s groundout.

Greencastle added another run in the fifth on a Gloria Brewer sac fly and got two more runners on with two outs but couldn’t plate another run and found no traction in the seventh, seeing its season come to an end at 14-14.
