Pianist Claude Cymerman, cellist Eric Edberg, mandolinist, vocalist and percussionist Ben Hogan, pianist, composer and accompanist Cathie Malach, and blues great Tad Robinson are the “friends making music for friends” kicking off the Greencastle Summer Music Festival’s 19th season Wednesday night in Gobin Church.

The GSMF presents free concerts at 7:30 p.m. every Wednesday from May 31 through Aug. 16 with no admission free in Greencastle’s Gobin Church.

The concerts are supported by individual donors, an endowment at the Putnam County Community Foundation, and the Inn at DePauw, the host for the festival’s out-of-town performers.

This week’s program features a wide range of music: J.S. Bach, George Gershwin, the great Back composer Florence Price, original music by Malach, and pop covers performed by Malach and Robinson.

“I’m so delighted to be hosting our 19th season,” said Edberg, the DePauw emeritus professor who started the festival in 2005. “We love to start things off with a ‘variety show’ format featuring professional musicians based here in Greencastle, all of whom have national or international careers, and who are performing later in the season. This exemplifies our mission of celebrating community through shared arts experience-’friends making music for friends.’”

The festival continues next week with “New Friends, Part 1”: soprano Mary Martin and her accompanist Allan Armstrong, and pianist pianist Maria Lyapkova, each making their GSMF debut. Cellist Edberg joins in as well, in a program including music from Schumann to Strauss to Debussy to musical theater.
