Fillmore council announces new safety measures, updates
FILLMORE — An 18-year-old contract between the Town of Fillmore’s council and the fire department is about to undergo an update, town officials said.
The contract seeks to create transparency with the public about the fire department’s use of its yearly $6,000 budget, therefore “making them accountable” for their spending, according to President Meridith Trusty. A representative from the fire department was not present at the meeting.
“We want to know what they’re expecting and what we should expect,” said Trusty after the meeting was adjourned. The contract was passed over to Town Attorney Jeff Boggess for revisions and editing.
Additionally, a NARCAN box was installed outside of the town hall since the last council meeting. Accessible to the public at all times, the box contains a nasal spray that reverses opioid overdoses, plus fentanyl testing strips that should be used “if your child comes home with a powdery substance” said Vice president Jerry Huff. Town clerk Andi Schardt added that instructions for giving a Naloxone dose were inside the box.
For more safety upkeep, a new tornado siren was erected outside of Town Hall the afternoon of June 1 after the previous siren was struck by lightning and deemed beyond repair, Schardt said. It was tested both manually and through the county, though Fillmore residents attending the meeting reported not hearing the siren.
In other business:
- The Cardinal Road bridge has been completed, and now, with a layer of gravel laid over the pavement, the bridge should be ready for use “in a couple of months,” according to Trusty.
- The town is also preparing for the installation of all new water meters. After setbacks, however, the projected May installation has been postponed. Its tentative installation date is now August, according to Schardt.
