NEW WINCHESTER — A Putnam County man died in a head-on collision in western Hendricks County Wednesday morning.

Alan Blackledge, 64, Coatesville (Heritage Lake), was killed when the pickup he was driving collided with a tractor-trailer at New Winchester.

Hendricks County sheriff’s deputies were called to the scene at U.S. 36 east of State Road 75 at approximately 11:15 a.m. when the crash was reported to the Hendricks County Communications Center.

The preliminary investigation shows that Blackledge’s Chevrolet pickup truck was traveling westbound on U.S. 36 when, for an unknown reason, the it abruptly traveled across the center line and struck a Freightliner semi tractor and trailer carrying an oversized load.

Blackledge was pronounced dead at the scene. A passenger in the pickup truck was taken to an area hospital with non-life-threating injuries. The driver of the semi-tractor was not injured.

Hendricks County Sheriff’s Office crash reconstructionists in addition to the Hendricks County Coroner’s Office are investigating the crash.

  • The passenger had non-life-threatening injuries, so I would think (s)he could identify who was driving the pick-up truck. They probably needed time to notify extended family that might not see this post.

  • Alan is/was my husband. I want you to know they gave me enough time to call all my children and meet at his mothers home before they posted his name. I feel like the people of Putnam and Hendricks County are good and caring.
