Ethan Wallace named 2023-24 Schroer Scholarship recipient
Ethan Wallace, a 2021 South Putnam High School graduate, will receive the inaugural $5,000 Timothy E. Schroer Memorial Scholarship as he prepares for his junior year at Wabash College.
“I’m just really grateful. This scholarship is going to make a huge difference in my college experience, being able focus on academics without worrying about how I’m going to pay to attend Wabash for the year,” Wallace said.
Wallace is the son of Ian and Gretchen (Blaydes) Wallace of Cloverdale. He participated in the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and the Ethics Bowl team, and graduated magna cum laude in the top 10 percent of his class at South Putnam
At Wabash College, he is a staff writer for The Bachelor student newspaper, serves as a student senate representative, participates in the Wabash Christian Men’s Club, has been named to the Dean’s List, and plays on the college’s tennis team. He also has volunteered at Family Support Services in Greencastle and at his church, Wellspring Christian Church in Coatesville.
The Timothy E. Schroer Memorial Scholarship was established this year in honor of the late Tim Schroer, who taught Latin and English for 25 years at South Putnam High School. After his death from pancreatic cancer in October 2022, the memorial scholarship was created and will be given annually to a South Putnam graduate.
“Teaching and reaching the young people was who Tim was. And for that reason, continuing to help South Putnam students reach their academic goals through a scholarship makes perfect sense,” said Schroer’s wife, Becky.
Schroer would be proud to help South Putnam students to financially be able to go to college and achieve their dreams, she added. Schroer, who graduated from Wabash College, also depended on financial assistance and work-study in order to reach his dream of teaching.
“One of the things I love most about the community I was able to grow up in is all the support that I continue to get even in college,” Wallace said. “This scholarship is another example of how supportive the South Putnam community is, and it’s another reason why I’m so grateful for where I’m from,” he added.
