The Greencastle Summer Music Festival continues its celebration of community and “friends making music for friends” on Wednesday June 14 at 7:30 p.m. in Gobin Church. Admission is free — the GSMF concerts are supported by an endowment at the Putnam County Community Foundation and donations from individuals and businesses, including the Inn at DePauw.

The festival, now in its 19th year, presents world-class professional musicians every Wednesday evening in a relaxed, welcoming atmosphere, and is Putnam County’s only indoor summer concert series, complementing the outdoor Tuesday ParkFest concerts, First Friday events and music at the Saturday Farmers Market.

This week’s concert is titled “New Friends, Part 2.” Teagan Faran, DePauw’s new violin professor, makes her GSMF debut, presenting an evening exploring the wonderful world of string sounds. The program travels centuries of violin repertoire and tradition from across the globe, including beloved Bach favorites, tango charmers and original music inspired by all of the above. Faran will be joined by festival founder and cellist Eric Edberg and local percussionist Ben Hogan for part of the program.

“Teagan is one of the most versatile and engaging performers I’ve ever heard or worked with,” says Edberg. “She’s equally adept at virtuosic acoustic classical violin playing and fascinating electronic effects in contemporary music. This is going to be a unique and fascinating performance, and we are thrilled to add her to our community of GSMF ‘friends making music for friends.’”

A native of Buffalo, NY, Teagan Faran is a multidisciplinary musician focused on enacting social change through the arts. Faran has collaborated with the International Contemporary Ensemble, Alarm Will Sound, Palaver Strings and the Cabrillo Festival Orchestra. Recent recording features include albums with Carlos Simon, loadbang, and Diamanda Galás. Also active in the world of tango music, she has performed with Victor Lavallén and the Orquesta Escuela de Emilio Balcarce, as well as at festivals across the United States.

Faran holds degrees from the University of Michigan and the Manhattan School of Music. She has held fellowships with the Fulbright Program, Turn the Spotlight, Dee Dee Bridgewater’s Woodshed Network, and OneBeat. Faran teaches at DePauw University and the Sa’Oaxaca International Strings Festival as well as being a certified personal trainer, with a focus on career longevity for performers.

The festival will continue next week on Wednesday, June 21 with Music and Dance of Northern India, featuring Anindita Sen (dance choreographer), Kathak Dancers, Amudhan Venkateswaran (tabla), and longtime GSMF friend, George Wolfe (tanpura and saxophone).
