Greencastle VFW Post 1550 to close its doors
After more than 80 years in the Greencastle community, General Jesse M. Lee VFW Post 1550 will close its doors at the end of June.
Post Commander Mark Rogers announced the impending closure in a notice to the community published Monday.
“General Jesse M. Lee VFW Post 1550 has been in the community for over 80 years,” Rogers said. “During that time, we have been a pillar of the community working with city and county governments and helping veterans and organizations in the county. We are proud of our past accomplishments and will continue to work in the community. We are grateful to those that have served our post in the past and those that have been working diligently to continue our services these past few years.”
Rogers noted that the bottom line is that Post 1550 will be closing as a brick-and-mortar organization. However, the plan is to continue as a post in the community and meet at a location or locations to be determined later.
“Many ‘club’ organizations have been declining in the last several years, and we are one of those groups,” Rogers wrote. “We have just over 200 members on our books. There are over 2,000 eligible veterans in Putnam County. Still, we are struggling as a post and club to meet our goals.”
He noted a lack of veteran participation and community support over the last several years leading to the decision.
A more extensive exploration of the history and possible future of the General Jesse M. Lee Post will be published in an upcoming edition of the Banner Graphic.
