After two years of having a baseball player in an all-star game, Putnam County will have a softball player in the same position this weekend.

North Putnam’s Emma Williams will be a member of the South team at the Softball Coaches Association of Indiana North-South All-Star Game Saturday, joining a select group of players who will compete in the two-game series at Indiana University’s Andy Mohr Softball Complex.

Williams was named to the South team out of district three, one of seven players in the district chose for the game, which includes players from Roncalli, Zionsville, Mooresville, Hamilton Southeastern and Seeger.

“Honestly, this has been so awesome,” Williams said. “I’ve worked so hard and to get all these awards this year, it is the result of all the hard work I’ve put in.

“I couldn’t have done this without my teammates and my coaches. It’s really awesome. I’m up there with the players I look up to and watch.”

Williams was selected to the SCAI Class A/2A All-State Team for District 3 and was selected from that list to join the South squad for the All-Star Game.

“(North Putnam head coach Kerry Roussey) called me while I was at Ashlynn (Stacks’) graduation party to tell me,” Williams said about how she found out about making the All-Star roster. “There’s 20-21 people on each team and it’s a chance to play against talent that we’ve seen before from other parts of the state that we may not see otherwise.”

As a catcher, Williams will get to work with some of the top arms in the state, including Ms. Softball candidates Keegan Rothrock of Roncalli, a Florida University commit, Erin Hoehn of 2A State Champion North Posey, a Michigan University commit, and Madi Rutan of Columbus North, an Eastern Kentucky University commit, during the two-game series on Saturday.

Players will arrive at IU Friday for a brief introductory period before an afternoon practice, followed by an awards banquet held at Edgewood High School in the evening.

Team photos and pregame practice will take place Saturday morning with first pitch for the first game set for 10:15 a.m.

In-between games, the SCAI will announce the winners of the coach of the year award as well as Ms. Softball with the second game to follow 30 minutes after the conclusion of the first game.

Like other all-star games, Williams expected to be in-and-out of the lineup in both games but said the opportunity was one she wasn’t going to pass up.

“I want to have fun and play ball,” Williams said about what she looked forward to during the weekend. “It will be fun to meet a lot of the players as North Putnam is not a big school, so we don’t see teams like Roncalli, like Mooresville or Zionsville.

“I want to be able to see the talent these girls have and to have fun while doing so.”
