Several local agencies responded to a call for help at Fern Cliff Nature Preserve Friday afternoon to what was reported as a “long fall.”

According to information from the police scanner, Putnam County Dispatch received a call of a fall at the Madison Township Nature Preserve shortly before 2 p.m.

The victim, who apparently called in the fall himself, estimated the fall to be approximately 50 feet. He also estimated the location was at least a half mile down the trail from the preserve entrance.

The dispatcher was even able to ascertain his latitude and longitude coordinates.

Emergency responders had made contact with the victim by 2:20 p.m., saying it would be a “high-angle rescue.” At that point, they were trying to figure out the best path in and back out with the victim.

Madison Township Volunteer Fire Department and Putnam County EMS initially responded to the scene, with Greencastle Fire Department requested to the scene, as well as Roachdale Fire Department with its side-by-side ATV. Bellmore Fire Department from Parke County was also dispatched to the scene.

As of 2:30 p.m., emergency responders were calling it a “high angle rescue” and figuring out the best path of exit.

A medical helicopter was also requested.

Shortly before 3:30 p.m., the patient was reportedly out of the woods and on the ATV, on the way to the ambulance.
