Gary Byron Helton, 69, of Danville, passed away at home, unexpectedly on June 16, 2023.

He was born in Indianapolis and was a son of the late Cecil “Tex” and Dorothy June (Lieske) Helton. He grew up in Hazelwood and was a lifelong resident of Danville.

Gary retired from Duke Energy in 2016 after 38 years, then continued working as a consultant for EHV Energy Services and 4D Acquisition and Consulting LLC as a negotiator and land acquisition consultant.

Gary was an airplane and helicopter pilot and mechanic; he enjoyed designing and constructing anything ranging from houses to waterwheels. He has been a member of the International Right of Way Association since 1979 and was a lifetime member of EAA (Experimental Aircraft Association).

Gary is survived by his wife of 14 years, Ellen (Moser) Helton; two children, Lindsay (Zach) Helton-Whitaker and Byron Helton; grandchildren Byron Helton Jr., Alexis Helton, Stefan Whitaker, Zalyn Whitaker, Arabella Whitaker, Christian Whitaker, Adelaide Somers and Eva Somers; and two “bonus children” Lindsey Somers (Liam) and Nathan Hubbard (Jean Teng). His siblings are Diana Helton Rennels (Ken) and Dave Helton (Dee), both of Danville. His “adopted siblings” are Danny Johnson (Charlene) of Coatesville, Gail Johnson Smith (Jim) of Carmel, Becky Johnson Ping, Indianapolis, Larry Johnson (Linda), Greencastle, Heidi Johnson Irving (Mark), Danville. He held a special place in his heart for his sister-in-law Martha Moser (Floyd Briggs, fiance) and niece Cassidy Haidle.

The family will receive friends on Saturday, July 1 from 10 a.m. until 12 p.m. at the home of Gary and Ellen Helton, 292 N. County Road 200 West, Danville. The funeral service will begin at 12:30 p.m. Burial will follow in New Winchester Cemetery.
