James D. Zachary

James D. Zachary, 79, of Roachdale, passed away Thursday evening, June 22, 2023 at Wellbrooke of Crawfordsville.

James was born Feb. 28, 1944 in Crawfordsville to the late Forrest Zachary and Mary (Sorrels) Gowin. He was a 1962 graduate of Crawfordsville High School.

He went on the serve his country in the U.S. Navy and the U.S. Army. He retired from the Indiana Army National Guard. He received the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal for his service during the Vietnam Campaign, along with the National Defense Service Medal also during the Vietnam Campaign.

James drove a truck for Schwan’s for four years. James was an avid camper, he also enjoyed fishing, gardening and golfing, along with spending time with his family.

Survivors include his daughter, Kimberly McKell (Charles) of Palmetto, Fla.; two sons, James D. Zachary Jr. (Kristi) of Westfield and Trevor Shane Zachary of Hillsboro; a brother, Mark Zachary (Rhonda) of Ladoga; two sisters, Annette Justus of Valparaiso and Lori Dossett (Phil) of Crawfordsville; four grandchildren, Chaz, Travis, Christina and Kennedy; along with six great-grandchildren.

James was preceded in death by his parents; stepfather Bill Gowin, brother David Zachary and sister Sharon Posthauer.

Visitation will be from 4-7 p.m. on Tuesday, June 27 at Servies & Morgan Funeral Home in Roachdale. Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, June 28, also at the funeral home officiated by David Bower. Burial will follow at Indian Creek Hill Cemetery Waveland. Military honors will be provided by the American Legion and the U.S. Army.
