James Monroe Taylor

James Monroe Taylor, 95, of Greencastle, formerly of Indianapolis, passed away on Tuesday, July 4, 2023.

Born Feb. 23, 1928 in Limedale, he was the son of Roy and Zelda (Diel) Taylor. He was a graduate of Reelsville High School, received his bachelor’s degree from Eastern Illinois University and his master’s degree from Ball State University.

James retired from MSD Wayne Township of Marion County, where he was an administrator for several years. He was a longtime member of the Chapel Hill United Methodist Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Eleanor M. (Mitchell) Taylor; and brothers, Robert, Willie and Benjamin Taylor.

James is survived by his son, Michael J. Taylor; daughters Jane Taylor-Holmes and Janet K. (Joseph) Genovese; grandchildren Laren (Brad) Barnhill, Melissa Taylor, James (Alex) Taylor, Richard (Meagan) Taylor, Ellie Genovese and Hannah Genovese; great-grandchildren, Christopher Owens, Keaton Barnhill, Mitchell Owens, Connor Owens, Katie Owens, Averee Barnhill, Brady Barnhill, Abigail Taylor, Isabelle Taylor, Aadan Taylor, Jordyn Coupe, Brooke Coupe, Harper Taylor and Chandler Taylor; and granddog Shimmy.

Funeral services will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Monday, July 10 at the Bittles and Hurt Funeral Home. Interment will follow at the Boone-Hutcheson Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 10 a.m. until time of service at the funeral home on Monday.

The family greatly acknowledges Pat Conerly for her longtime care of both Eleanor and James, as well as Dr. Craig Johnson and the caring staff at Mill Pond.
