Sheriff’s Office

Putnam County sheriff’s deputies investigated five recent crashes.

• At 11:25 a.m. on Wednesday, Kathryn C. Hannon, 29, Indianapolis, was westbound on U.S. 36, attempting to make a left turn onto County Road 225. Robert C. Overpeck, 76, Rockville, was eastbound on 36 in a 2003 Buick Century.

After speaking to witnesses, Major Dwight Simmons determined that Hannon turned in front of Overpeck’s, and they collided. Both vehicles spun approximately 180 degrees and came to rest in the intersection after sustaining heavy front-end damage.

Hannon complained of arm and knee pain but declined to be transported from the scene. Both Overpeck and his passenger, William Bonifacius, Roachdale, were transported to Hendricks Regional for medical evaluation and complaints of chest pain.

Both vehicles were towed. Simmons estimated damage at $5,000-$10,000.

• At 4:45 a.m. on Monday, Bradlee J. Marshall, 28, Brazil, was eastbound on County Road 75 South in a 2015 Chevrolet Cruze when he ran into a tree down in the road.

Marshall told Deputy Kyle Lee he was unable to avoid the tree, which caused the vehicle to suffer heavy damage.

The car was towed. Lee estimated damage at $10,000-$25,000.

• At 4:07 a.m. on Monday, Katherine P. Phillips, 25, Avon, was northbound on County Road 857 East in a 2020 Ford Transit registered to Principle Merchants of Hookset, N.H.

Phillips was driving at an elevated rate of speed when she came upon a tree down across the road. Deputy Randy Patrick noted that Phillips did not notice the tree, which was nearly 12 inches in diameter, and nearly knocked it off the roadway.

The impact caused severe front end and undercarriage damage to the van, which was towed.

Phillips was taken by ambulance to Hendricks Regional Hospital in Danville.

She was cited for speeding and driving with a suspended license.

Patrick estimated damage at $5,000-$10,000.

• At 10:41 a.m. on Thursday, June 29, Haylee E. Wood, 19, Greencastle, was northbound on Manhattan Road rounding a slight curve to the right in a 2007 Kia Spectra. Rose A. Sanders, 80, Reelsville, was southbound in a 2015 Ford Edge.

Deputy Patrick reported that the road was slightly wet from an earlier rain. As Wood navigated the turn, she failed to maintain her lane, crossing into the southbound lane and striking Sanders’ vehicle.

Wood was taken to Putnam County Hospital and released with minor injuries. Sanders was taken to Terre Haute Regional Hospital, and her injuries were unknown.

Both vehicles were towed. Patrick estimated damage at $10,000-$25,000.

• At 2:20 p.m. on Wednesday, June 28, Tawny Miles, 67, Danville, was backing out of a spot at the Putnam County Airport, 1599 Ballard Lane, Greencastle, when she backed into a parked 2015 Buick Regal registered to Wendy L. Pearl.

Upon Deputy Lee’s arrival at the airport, employees showed him surveillance footage of Miles backing into the other vehicle. She can be seen getting out of her car and briefly looking at her bumper before pulling away.

The deputy was able to locate Miles, who said she did not think she did any damage, then provided her insurance information.

Lee estimated damage at $2,500-$5,000.
