Subject takes own life in Woods Edge standoff

A man took his own life Tuesday afternoon following a two-hour standoff with police at his Woods Edge subdivision home.

Both the Indiana State Police and Greencastle Police Department confirmed to the Banner Graphic that the incident ended with the man’s death by suicide.

Due to the nature of the case, police are not revealing the man’s identity nor many specific details.

A department spokesman said that upon learning of a warrant against the subject, GPD contacted ISP for its assistance given prior history with this subject and this address.

Following a brief pursuit that included an ISP helicopter, the man arrived at the Cedarwood Drive home, with a female leaving the home as the police tried to establish contact with the male inside.

It’s unclear if lines of communication were ever established, but the ISP SWAT team was called to the scene to attempt to bring about a peaceful resolution to the incident.

Ultimately, that was not the case. Around 1:30 p.m., ISP Sgt. Matt Ames posted the following to Facebook: “The situation at Woods Edge subdivision has been resolved there is no longer a threat to the public.”

GPD and ISP had earlier sent out messages urging the public to avoid Woods Edge and for area residents to stay inside their homes.

Both Ames and GPD Asst. Chief Ed Wilson later confirmed that the situation had ended in suicide.

In confirming the news, Ames said there would be no further information released.

Wilson briefly expressed GPD’s condolences as well as its appreciation for its fellow law enforcement agencies.

“We want to extend our condolences to the family at this time,” Wilson said, “and would like to thank the Indiana State Police and the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office for their support through this incident.”
