Morris withdraws name from City Council consideration

A crowded ballot for three at-large positions on the Greencastle City Council got a little less crowded on Monday morning.

Democrat Thom Morris withdrew his candidacy for the position, according to Voter Registration Clerk Stacia Hathaway.

Given that July 3 was the deadline for parties to fill vacancies on the ballot, the move likely leaves Democrats with just two candidates for the three spots in the Nov. 7 municipal election, in former Councilman Gary Lemon and Kim Fidler.

Other candidates in what is now a six-person race for three positions include independent Derek Jorgensen and three Republicans, incumbents Mark Hammer and Darrel Thomas, as well as Katherine Asbell.

Elsewhere in council races, incumbent Democrat Russell Harvey faces former Councilman David Masten in First Ward, incumbent Democrat Veronica Pejril is up against Republican Tina Nicholson in Third Ward and GOP incumbent Cody Eckert faces Vincent Aguirre in Fourth Ward.

Republican Stacie Langdon is unopposed in her bid for another term in Second Ward.

Meanwhile, Democrat Brian Cox and Republican Lynda Dunbar are facing off for the mayor’s office, and Republican Mikayla Johnson is unopposed for clerk-treasurer.
