Sheriff’s Office

Putnam County sheriff’s deputies investigated three recent property-damage crashes.

• At 11:59 a.m. on Sunday, Parish A. Alford, 56, Fortville, was westbound on U.S. 36 in a 2004 Acura TSX when he hit a deer.

Sgt. Brian Helmer estimated damage at $2,500-$5,000.

• At 8:25 p.m. on Friday, Allen Wright, 61, New Ross, was eastbound on U.S. 36 in a 2017 Ford Escape. Wright told Deputy David Bennett he did not realize the vehicle in front of him was turning, so he attempted to pass it.

Nicole Heath, 37, Veedersburg, was eastbound in a 2012 Ford Escape, attempting to turn left into the driveway at 8505 W. U.S. 36. As she did so, Wright was attempting to pass and the two vehicles made contact.

The contact caused Wright to lose control, and he went down an embankment, with the vehicle rolling more than once, coming to a stop on its top.

Wright was able to get out of the vehicle and was seen by medics for a minor cut on his right arm. He refused further medical attention.

The area where Wright attempted to pass is a no-passing zone.

Both vehicles were towed due to disabling damage. Bennett estimated damage at $10,000-$25,000.

• At around 6:10 p.m. on Tuesday, July 18, James Cherco, 51, Lizton, was leaving the driveway at 55 Jefferson Valley in a 2004 Ford E-350 box truck. As he did so, he backed into a 2023 Kia Telluride registered to the home’s occupant, James R. Johnson, Coatesville.

The parked Kia sustained damage to the left front fender and a blown tire.

The following morning, Johnson called police to investigate, and Sgt. Helmer arrived. Cherco, a contractor who was working on the house, was at the scene and said that as he was leaving the evening before, he did not see the other car and backed into it.

Helmer estimated damage at $2,500-$5,000.
