INDOT provides updates to ongoing projects in and around Greencastle

Monday, July 31, 2023

The Indiana Department of Transportation has announced updates to multiple construction projects happening in and around the City of Greencastle.

Right now, INDOT’s maintenance team is performing chip seal operations on U.S. 231 . U.S. 231 will is temporarily closed from approximately 1.05 miles north of I-70 to approximately 0.22 miles south of S.R. 240. The closure is expected to last for last for at least a week.

Currently, crews are also milling and paving portions of State Road 240 between U.S. 231 and County Road 475 East. Traffic is being controlled by a flagging operation and/or will be moved to the road shoulders as needed. No detour is required, as the road is not closed. The restrictions are expected to last through early October, weather permitting. The entire contract is expected to be completed in October of 2024, weather permitting.

Additionally, the northbound lane of U.S. 231 remains restricted as part of the ongoing major pavement improvement project in Greencastle. The northbound lane is restricted between State Road 240 and Washington Street. Northbound traffic has been shifted into the existing southbound lane within the work zone, and is restricted to ten-feet wide.

INDOT has discovered, through ongoing work, that the existing conditions of the pavement are more deteriorated than expected. Operations now have to move from a mill and fill operation to a full depth replacement in order to address those conditions. INDOT is working with the designer and contractor to implement the new design and work will continue in the near future.

INDOT appreciates the continued cooperation of the community and the traveling public.

The official detour for southbound traffic follows U.S. 36 to S.R. 75 to S.R. 240.

This project includes four phases, and will involve both lane restrictions and closures. The project limits are on U.S. 231, between S.R. 240 and Frazier Street. Work includes milling, curb replacement, curb ramp reconstruction and full-depth pavement replacement work. One-way traffic will be maintained throughout the project, with exception to the closures. INDOT will hold public information meetings before work starts on U.S. 231 in each construction season.

  • Incredible that the contractor was given over a year to complete a simple 5 mile mill-and-repave job which could be completed in a few weeks. That's why these construction projects drag on forever, they have no incentive to finish in a reasonable time frame.
