Castle Collectives calling all K-12 students

Tuesday, August 1, 2023

The Castle is embarking on a pilot program for a creativity center housed in a downtown Greencastle store, Conspire. This pilot will run for 10 months from summer 2023 to spring of 2024 (June through November and January through April) providing free monthly programs to K-12 kids (10 a.m.-noon on third Saturdays) led by teaching artists, teachers, community artists and others. Sign-ups are first come, first served.

Past Castle Collective experiences have included Pop Art Food Sculptures with Regan Zerwig and Blues Songwriting Techniques with Tad Robinson. With those two collectives under the belt already, the Castle and Conspire teams are looking forward to the rest in the series. The schedule below provides more details for each of the workshops, including links to sign up on both The Castle and Conspire websites.

Due to spacing and material allotment, registration for each collective is highly encouraged to ensure a spot.

August 19: Wood Projects with Shelby Stokes – Do a variety of projects made from scrap and reclaimed wood.

September 16: Zentangles with Jamie Nichols - The zentangle is a doodling exercise that allows artists to explore line quality, patterns and implied textures with limited restrictions. It encourages creativity, enhances hand-eye coordination, and relieves stress.

October 21: By Fiona with Fire with Fiona White - Hands on experience with local clay and basic hand-building.

November 18: Cadvre Exquis Songwriting Workshop with JP Olsen - Join in an exciting creative journey and explore the world of imagination through the process of the “Cadavre Exquis” game. Students will experiment with drawing, writing and music as they collaboratively create unique and unexpected artworks.

January 20: Creative Youth Painting with Charlie Martoglio - Learn techniques to paint scales, fur, patterns, skin, feathers and eyes while creating an animal of your choice.

February 17: Snowglobe Tumbler with Heather Lawrence - You’ll learn how to make a glass can snowglobe tumbler. You’ll learn how to use uv resin. And get to choose your own decals and glitter to make it totally customized to you. All ages welcome.

March 16: Introduction to Woodblock Printmaking with Matt Rees - Learn the basics of the ancient art of printmaking — the original meme.

April 20: Introduction to Herbalism and Plant Allies with Ella Dye Thomas - Basic introduction to the identification, history and use of 15 herbs. Each participant will take home his or her own tea blend created at the workshop using the provided 15 herbs and knowledge learned at the workshop.
