Aquatic center set to close ‘great season’ on Sunday
The 68-day summer swim season -- a “great season” by local officials’ standards -- comes to an end Sunday at the Greencastle Aquatic Center.
Assistant Park Director Chrysta Snellenberger listed aquatic center numbers through Tuesday for the Park Board at its August meeting that showed $39,632 in revenues via paid admissions from non-pass holders, $24,980 in concession revenues and $24,350 in pool pass purchases. That totals $88,962 in 2023 revenues with the final weekend still to come.
“It’s been a great year,” Snellenberger said, noting that only two days were lost to weather, while the pool was voluntarily closed three days to deal with a mid-July bacteria concern.
She also reported 364 individual passes were sold with 3,277 people making their way to the pool and paying individual daily admissions this year.
With the pool closing as the start of school begins and teenage lifeguards become preoccupied by classes and athletics, no thought was given Wednesday by the Park Board for attempting to continue the season on an evening or weekend schedule as has often been bandied about in the past. Back when the school calendar was different and school started later, the pool typically ran a Memorial Day-Labor Day schedule.
Meanwhile, no action was taken on the surge tank replacement at the aquatic center, pending a new round of proposals from Spear Corp., Roachdale.
Also, among the Park and Recreation Department claims approved for July was a $5,367 bill from Spear Corp. for chemicals and multi-port repairs.
